The Trouble With Post-Vegetarianism
Can't eat steak.

I had a two-inch prime cut of rib I broiled tonight. Took one bite and nearly gagged.

I guess it's just burgers for me.

1. you have to ease back into it, it will throw your body for a loop
start with small amounts and work up

I have a theory... if your "eye teeth" (the teeth just next to the 4 frount ones) aren't pointed, you really werent't meant to be a heavy meat eater. People with "flat teeth" usually order meat well done, folks with "pointed" teeth love it RARE (mooooooo)

this guy has flat teeth

this gal does NOT (although she has interesting teeth art)

bet he likes steak "medium well" and she likes it rare

3. I Like it Rare
Medium-rare, anyway.

I can do burgers. I can do some cuts of pork. Chicken's not a problem.

I've had some steaks that I didn't have trouble eating, but would get stomache pangs later. This just made me gag. Got it from a real, live butcher, too :(

Thing was like 2 inches thick. You think that had anything to do with it?

4. I dunno, I do know that when I started eating meat after being
ovo-lactarian it took almost a year before I could enjoy red meat

as for your loverly slice of prime, maybe it would be better to hide it in a nice veggie heavy stew (shame huh?)

as for the butcher, I doubt it. Perhaps it hadn't been "aged" enough tho... that's a possibility

7. could it be the hormones in the meat?
I can't eat beef from three of the four supermarkets near me. My GI tract is just thrown into a tizzy. Got no trouble with the beef from the other, which is a better-quality independent store.

I have the same trouble with pork if it has been injected with tenderizing fluid. I'm up all night after eating it. So I rarely do.

I ought to buy organic meat, but I don't think of it or can't afford it.

6. Never thought about it that way.
Checked my teeth. I'm "pointy," must be rare to medium. ;-)

10. Now that's really interesting.
My husband's teeth are like the guy's. He has been vegetarian for many years (ever since the BSE crisis), but back when he ate steak, he liked it well done.

My teeth are like the woman's, except without the art. I damn near look like a vampire, in fact. And I like my steak rare.

Interesting theory.

11. Just checked my teeth.
Need to floss, eeewwwww.......

I have flat. Really flat, but I love red meat and like it rare. How often I eat it has to do with my activity level and what sports I am doing. In addition to food, I am an exercise junkie, which is a really good combo, I can eat and eat and never get fat. When I am running and doing yoga, which are mostly endurance exercise, my desire for meat is muted. If I am training for climbing, a more strength/power oriented sport, I crave red meat.

15. Hmmm, that is interesting, but I'm another exception...
Must be evolution at work! My teeth are pointy, but I like my meat medium well; except hamburger, which must be well-done! I used to order everything well-done until I realized it was usually burnt on the outside, and tough on the inside...

Gee, I wonder where one gets tooth tattoos?

5. Why the change in diet?
I'm not a vegetarian, so I'm not going to preach. I am, however, curious as to why you decided to eat meat again.

9. I Got Bored
I made the switch back to meat ages ago, well over 5 years, after having been meatless (but with dairy products) for 3-4 years. The biggest trouble was - I don't like most veggies, so you could say my diet was somewhat *limited.*

13. As I posted in another thread
I don't naturally eat very much meat either. I've never been a vegetarian, but red meat has never really done very much for me. It makes me feel bogged down.

I've found that eating meat as more of a condiment, and not a main entree, has allowed me to incorporate more red meat into my diet,(which I do feel is important) without having to eat a great big slab of something. This might be a good philosophy for you too.
If I'm going to eat red meat, I feel much better about eating 'whole' cuts, as opposed to ground beef. You have no control over the quality of ground beef...or any ground meat, for that matter.
What I do lots of times is use small slices of sirloin or rib eye in stir fry or pasta sauce or soups or stews, etc... I often do the same with chicken too.
That way, your body is able to digest it better, you're getting the nutrients you need from it, and the larger part of the meal is still grains and vegetables.

Seems to work for me, anyway.

14. Me too
I was pesco-vegetarian for over 10 years. About 6 years ago I added back some poultry. The we went to Argentina for 2 weeks where it was hard not to eat some red meat. After that I didn't restrict my diet as much.

I still don't really like red meat all that much though. I will make it for my husband, because he loves it, but I only want 2-3 bites. Unless it's braised short ribs, then I'll eat a pretty good portion!
