Chocolate & Biscuits?
Anyone else grow up eating this on Sunday mornings? We'd have scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, sausage gravy, chocolate, and biscuits. Melt a little bit of butter in the chocolate & crumble a biscuit into it... bliss!

1. I hated that no one had responded to your post yet...
I've never had this, but I am curious! What are the details? Do you crumble a biscuit into like a melted Hershey bar, or what?

3. LOL! Thanks! I thought maybe I needed to take another shower.
It's basically a chocolate sauce, I suppose, although we called it chocolate gravy. I always spooned some out onto the plate, then swirled a pat of butter around it in until it melted. Then I broke a southern-style biscuit (not a cookie) into bite-sized pieces and stirred them into the chocolate.

I know it sounds gross (or so I'm told by my beloved, but then, he thinks peanut butter & jelly sandwiches are gross.) But I like the mixture of the sweetness of the chocolate combined with the savory biscuit.

I tweaked a recipe from the web a bit; it's pretty close to what I remember:

2 teaspoons cocoa
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
pinch of salt

Mix the dry ingredients, then add the water and heat to boiling, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and cook for about 10 minutes, or until of desired consistency, still stirring frequently. (It should be thinner than sausage gravy, if that helps.) Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

4. Ok, I'm going to have to try this sometime...
My son would LOVE it! You know, it's probably better for you than sausage gravy, anyway!

BTW, one of my favorite things to eat in the world is a peanut butter and red plum jam sandwich!

I won't gross you out and tell you that I sometimes used to mix it with sausage gravy on the plate. Or maybe I will. :evilgrin:

I love peanut butter & jelly (or jam) sandwiches, too. This seems to be a British thing, though. My hubby likes peanut butter sandwiches with a thin smear of butter on the bread, and he likes jam sandwiches made the same way. He'll take one of each for lunch some days. But never shall the two mix!

I grew up eating it too. My grandmother from Alabama loved it and us grandkids grew up eating it.

I never thought more about it until I picked up John Egerton's "Southern Food" book a few years back and he covered it IIRC. So now that I've written a long answer to a short question, here's the abbreviated version: "yes, I have heard of it." :-)

6. I knew there had to be others.
I'll have to look for that book. Now that I don't live in the south anymore, I find myself really missing good southern food.
