Do you have a snowstorm menu? |
|
Its snowing here. Somehow, even a light snow causes one's head to go crazy with desire from one food or another. What do you make when it snows?

You got it! I made a pot of beef barley last night and put it out on the deck to stay cool (cold!). I just added the barley this morning (after letting the soup melt from being out all night) and it is ready to go. I'm gunna have me some soup and a salami 'n' stinky cheese sammich.
I also made some homemade macaroni last night. Made a clam ragout for it. There's a lot left over. I'm going to add some canned tomatoes to it and make a clam soup for Sparkly, cuz she won't eat meat. Guess she'll have a cheeeeeez sammich.

3. Soup's the ticket here |
|
You have to have soup in a blizzard. Beef Barley, Split Pea, or Beef Vegetable are great with the snow. You need to have a great crusty bread.
I know when ever I'm socked in I usually set the crock pot up early for a hearty soup with Brownies for dessert. Brownies just seem like a wintry thing --all fudgie and warm.
Hot Chocolate with whipped cream would be nice too -with some Kahlua for the adults.
I wanna have some snow here now Please!

4. Well I am almost snowed in |
|
we got about a foot of powder snow over night, and the winds are rising, white-out conditions are on the way.
I started the beans soaking last night in anticipation of today.
I have a pot of mixed bean veggie chili started, with an adobo/tomato base, a loaf of potato bread rising, and I am heading out to fill my bird feeders.
I add masa dumplings to this chili usually, and grate cheddar over each bowl.
My sister is heading over with movies and her jammies.

Hope all goes well and you're safe given the conditions. But your kitchen sounds like the best place to be right now.

Snowy weather is soup weather around here. I made a pot of cream of potato soup this afternoon. It was my first stab at it and it is pretty good if I may say so myself. We had grilled ham and cheese sandwiches with it and rice pudding for dessert.

7. I had homemade split pea soup |
|
actually made before the storm tho. To keep the house smelling good during the storm I made one of my favorite cold weather dinners. I get a big meaty lamb shank, put it in a dutch oven with some garlic, onion, celery and carrots and saute them all together. Then I had a bag of lentils some fresh rosemary and a can of diced tomatoes. Glug some red wine over the whole thing and stick it on the back burner for hours.
Then I serve the whole mess over cheesey polenta.

8. Ummmmm, that sounds great! |
|
I made split pea using the ham bone from Christmas. I added a Granny Smith apple and some ginger to brighten up the flavor. It was subtle, but I noticed the difference. And I made beer dumpling to make it even heartier - really hit the spot after shoveling last night.
This morning I made banana, whole wheat pancakes to prepare for more shoveling.

9. Your soups sound delicious |
|
Living in Arizona whenever the first cool weather is here I make chile. Summer or winter I make pea soup, veggie beef soup and chicken noodle served with a salad and bread, that is a meal for me. Not much cooking except for the first day when making chile, then it is microwave heating. The only thing I cannot eat during the summer months here is chile. It needs to be cold outdoors for me to eat it.
So, if I lived in the east or the snow areas, I would have a pot of chilie on the stove. That is a cold weather warming food.

When the snow first hit but I had that ham bone hanging around so I thought I'd go w/ the split pea. By the way - it is delicious. Thanks for saying so. :-)

I was flirting with the idea of adding ginger to the soup but my son was coming over and he doesn't like me to play around with one of his favorite soups. I also thought it would brighten up the taste. Apples was a great idea with the ginger.
Those pancakes sound delish. All I could manage to scrape up during the marathon shoveling session was baloney sandwiches. I've never used whole wheat flour for making pancakes, just bread. Do you have to add white flour too?

13. I improvised - I do that a lot |
|
I took a recipe I had for whole wheat banana bread (it uses 1.5 cups whole wheat flour to 0.5 cup white flour) and cut the sugar down to 3 tablespoons and added more milk (I use soy milk for most baking.) It worked; at least I thought they were good. ;-)
