Pink Lady apples

I saw these for the first time the other day and picked up several. They're great. The flesh is fairly white as any other apple. So I don't know why they're called Pink Lady. The flavor is slightly tart. But when you begin to chew on the skin at the last of a bite, it gets slightly sweet. A nice flavor experience.

I also like to buy Fuji, and Criterion. Then again I've never met an apple I didn't like unless they are soft and mealy.

2. Oh - soft apples - ewww

You and me both. Although they can be cooked down quick for an apple sauce. But I think that there's nothing more disappointing in fruit than mushy apples. Well, maybe a dry orange. Ick!

3. Mealy oranges are the worst.

I can usually tell ahead if an apple is going to be good or bad. But oranges can look perfect and you peel them and..... yuck!

4. No the absolute worst are........

The moldy berries that hide down in the bottom of the plastic carton. I've learned to always peek at the bottom. Fuzzy Berries......OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH Yuck.

5. my favorite...

...is Braeburn. VERY firm, and I have learned to tell which ones were tree-ripened by the appearance so I get a fabulous sweet yet tart apple.

I know there are a lot of other kinds of apples regionally that we never see here in Pacific Northwest apple country. On a trip through Massachusetts in November we stopped at apple barns that had all kinds of heirloom fruits. The russets were very attractive but I didn't get to taste one.

7. I've had some heirloom apples (red and yellow) and loved them.

They had a very rich, concentrated flavor. Slightly soft, and I didn't care for the peel, but great taste.

6. I posted on these apples ages ago and got nothing for responses!

I LOVE pink lady apples. The ones I usually get are barely pink, and usually on only one side, and sort yellowish on the other. They are crisp and sweet and slightly tart. My son eats them like candy.

BTW, my husband, who used to work in a grocery store when he was a teen, taught me about apples, and i have been passing this on... It is so tempting to always pick up the pretty red delicious apples, and there is nothing wrong with them except that they seem to always have less flavor in our opinion.

So I didn't see your original post. Nice for us to visit about them!

I was having one last night and I noticed something. The one I had last night didn't have the intense flavor. That one was chilled in the fridge. So from now on I'm getting only a few at a time and keeping them on the counter. The flavor was so different when they were room temperature.

I don't usually rave about apples but these really are special. I like to have fruit in the evening instead of chips and like that. And I miss the varieties of fruits available during the summer. Finding an apple this special is great in mid winter.

9. Yeah, these have saved my weight problem as I like to munch in the

evenings as well. Try one or two of the heirloom apples if you get a chance.
