Today I went to Costco
I need to get a few things, but was also curious to evaluate first-hand what we've been reading about for the last week or so, with regards to rice and shortages and limiting purchases.

First thing I noticed was that in the fresh fruit/veggie section, it seemed more sparse than even just one week ago, when I was last there. I don't know if they just rearranged things and so it being different threw me off (I can't stand when they move stuff around!)

Second thing I noticed was that at least two conversations that I overheard while walking by, were about shortages, and the economy and possible explanations.

Third thing I noticed was there was plenty of flour (and most everything else, except bananas).

Fourth thing was that when I was at the checkstand, the woman in front of me was asking the checker about why there wasn't any rice, and when they'd get more. So, the checker, the customer, and a few others started discussing it - the checker said that earlier that day some man tried to buy 3 bags of rice and was denied.

So, that's my first hand report, fwiw.

I always get a little disconcerted when I see things in the real world that correspond to things I read about here in fantasyland, lol.

1. But did you sample?
It's a free lunch.

I've noticed that late in the day the produce section dwindles. I'm not sure if they restock between Saturday and Sunday so that may have had something to do with it.

2. My hubby does the
middle of the week grocery extra pickups for me. I do wildlife rehab and specialize in rabbits so I go through a ton of greens. The past year they were out of them frequently. In all the years I have been buying greens there this past was the first when they were not available.

He was there last week and he said it was pandemonium in the rice lane. He came home with a big bag of jasmine rice because it is his fav and he wanted a supply just in case. Cracked me up.

4. I was in our local pan-Asian super store
They had rice stacked to the ceiling. All kinds of rice from high end sushi rice to cheap-o generic rice.

5. I didn't look at the regular rice.
Just the stuff in the organic section of the local Food Pyramid store. The prices there seemed pretty normal.
