German chocolate cake mix without pudding, and a seperate container of chocolate pudding mix. Stands to reason I can substitute-right?

1. Is it Instant or Cook Pudding Mix?
Actually, I don't know the answer to your question. What are you trying to make? The cake mix with the pudding is suppose to be a little more moist. Personally, I haven't noticed that much of a difference with or without the pudding in the mix--

I'd probably just make your recipe with the mix you have and forget adding the pudding to the cake mix.

2. Instant.....Thats not so good is it?
If I need to go back to the grocery, its no problem. Better that than another cooking disaster....

4. I think you DO want instant.
That's what this type of cake (which was very popular in the 70s and there are hundreds of those recipes available on the Internets) uses. Instant pudding mix.

3. My most-requested recipe is a sherry cake...
...that uses supermoist cake mix (the box says it has pudding) AND a box of instant pudding mix. It makes a delicious, moist cake.

So I vote for dumping the instant pudding mix in. It certainly won't hurt anything.

What kind of cake is your finished product supposed to be?

5. German chocolate chess squares....
Mix the cakemix with 1/2 c butter, an egg and 1 c chopped pecans until moistened. Press into bottom of 13/9 inch pan and set aside.

Combine 8oz softened cream cheese, 2 eggs and and 1 cup powdered sugar-beat at medium speed until blended.Gradually add rest of 16 oz container of powdered sugar.. Pour over chocolate layer, spreading evenly. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.

Its from the 1994 Southern Living compilation and I usually have good luck with their recipes. I'll probably add some toasted coconut into the top layer.

6. If you haven't made it yet you'd be ok to dump the instant in
I don't think it will make that much of a differenc though---It's all good.

7. I haven't and I will....if it doesn't work, I can always buy a dessert,,,,,
Its worth a try. If it fails, Boston cream pie will do perfectly as a substitute.
