Eternity - 2 people and a ham
Ain't it the truth! Ham, Ham again, Ham and cheese omelettes, ham sandwiches, macaroni and cheese with ham, Cauliflower-ham-olives-capers over pasta....

I even gave a HUGE package of ham to my folks and there's still more! It only ends, finally when it's time to make the split pea soup from the bone.

4. Easy... and soo good!

set oven to 300 and butter a 9x9
cook 4 large leeks with salt, pepper and 1T butter until softened -
add 1/2 lb sliced ham in matchstick

thinly slice 4 large potatoes (peeled or unpeeled - your choice)
shred 1/2 lb gruyere

layer in thirds - potatoes - leek mixture - cheese -
salt and pepper and a sprinkle of flour on each layer

end with cheese layer

pour 1C milk + 1C cream mixed with 1/2t nutmeg over all

bake 1 hr or until potatoes are tender and top is golden

know that all ingredients are flexible as to quantity and replacement -
for instance, I only use cream when I have guests - normally I just
use skim milk. Fewer leeks? no problem! no ham? leave it out!

you know the drill! have fun, I can almost smell it now.....

24. ohhhh... does that ever sound wonderful!
Thanks for the recipe, I can't wait to give this a try. Potatos au gratin is one of my faves, all the more so when there's some ham in there with the potatos and cheese. Never through of leeks with it, but this sounds just teriffic.

Thanks! (slobber, slobber... mouth watering)

I'm almost sure of it.

6. I agree that a good ham is one of the best things in the world
Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 12:31 PM by Phoebe Loosinhouse
and the tire factor is way higher than most foods. If I had as much leftover roast beef, I would have been sick to death of it in a relatively short time, but you can do so much with ham.

(looks reflectively out window, dunks ham chunk in coffee)

7. This is why God made freezers...
some time before Thanksgiving, in a fit of greed and insanity, I bought TWO Cook's hams because they were under a buck a pound.

All holiday festivities being over, I found myself with still a goodly mess of ham and cut it up into about 1 pound chunks, bagged 'em up and froze 'em.

(I am set for maybe a year of ham&eggs and grilled ham&cheese sandwiches.)

10. Tomorrow, it's Ham Cordon Bleu!
A slice of ham stuffed with a slice of ham and cheese, rolled and baked.

And for Saturday:

Ham tacos - a slice of ham deep fried and formed into a taco, then filled with ham, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream

11. Years ago, I made this ham ring...
I thought I got it from Pampered Chef but it's basically the same as this googled version. It's funny, I have not thought about this recipe until your thread. I have no idea what my family would think of it now.

1/4 pound cooked ham, coarsely chopped
1/4 pound fresh broccoli, chopped
1 bunch fresh green onions, chopped
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons Dijon-style prepared mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 (8 ounce) packages refrigerated crescent rolls

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large bowl, toss together ham, chopped broccoli, onion, parsley, and Swiss cheese. Stir in lemon juice and Dijon-style mustard.
On a 13-inch stone or baking sheet, arrange crescent triangles in a circle with bases overlapping in center and points to the outside. There should be a 3-inch diameter circle in center. Spoon the filling evenly over the crescent rolls. Fold points of triangle over filling and tuck under base at center. Filling will not be completely covered.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown. Serve warm.

13. You know what? That sounds pretty good.
It's been so long since I bought crescent rolls. I can imagine the overlapping bases and the little crescent points, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a lot simpler to just take one sheet and put the filling over it, make some cut-outs on the other sheet and just drape it over and seal. I think you would get the same effect with a lot less effort.

Anyway, this sounds like a tasty snack/appetizer type recipe and I am definitely going to try it. I'll let you know if my dough idea works. Thanks! :hi:

21. The new Recipe Creations would work too.
It's a sheet of crescent roll dough in a can. You could roll it out on a baking stone and make short slits on the outside edges of the dough. Put the filling in the middle and make a braided thingy. Dayum. I just made myself hungry.

14. and Ham Salad!

For all the not-so-pretty bits of the ham?

grind or very finely chop the ham
add pickle relish and miracle whip

they charge a mint for this at the store, and it's wonderful!

19. Ham salad
Every time I eat it, I get the WORST indigestion, and, for the life of me, I can't figure it out. None of the ingredients bothers me in any other incarnation, but, boy, ham salad, of all things, kills my guts.

25. My dad made THE BEST ham salad...
We held an annual Christmas party for quite a few years, and one of our "signature" appetizers was my dad's ham salad stuffed into little home-made puffs. What memories!

17. Ham and turkey balls or burgers
Chop some ham and mix with ground turkey, egg, Progresso Italian style bread crumbs and form balls around a little hunk of swiss cheese. Bake in the oven until brown and cooked through. You can also make ham/turkey patties with the same mix and top with a slice of swiss for turkey cordon blue burgers.

20. I think it multiplies itself when we aren't paying attention
But really, the freezer is our friend. In a pinch, ham can help put together a magic meal in a bowl with the help of onions and potatoes.

22. Make some strombolli
Throw some ham slices on half of a side of pizza dough, top with sliced tomatoes, sliced cheese and what ever else you think sounds good. (We usually make ours with Mortdella, ham, Capacolla, mozzerella, tomatoes, roasted red peppers maybe some Provolone) Fold the pizza dough over to make a big sandwich and crimp around he edges to prevent seepage. Cut a slit in the top and bake like a pizza on a stone.

23. Risotto
Ham is great in Risotto especially with Peas. It's also good in baked pasta made with tomato sauce. Cook some Ziti, throw in some ham, some tomato sauce and some shredded cheese...baked ziti with ham. It's yummers. My mom also made Pot Cheese and Noodles with Ham. Simple way is to just take some hot noodles egg or elbow, dump a container of cottage cheese in it with some chopped ham. Very homey and comforting. But I grew up eating it.
