"Roll Your Eyes department" - letters to Cook's Illustrated
Current issue someone writes in saying that some recipes call for the white part of a scallion and some call for the green part, and the reader wanted to know if there's a difference...

Would it kill you to buy a frickin' scallion and try the white part and then try the green part? You gotta write a magazine to ask?

(sigh)

2. Clearly,
you simply throttle them off at the neck, and use the parts separately.

EVERYBODY knows that...

3. It reminds me of a letter written to The Straight Dope
(a not-so-well-known Chicago Reader newspaper column that tries to answer everything, no matter how bizarre.

The question in question:

Dear Cecil:

I have a friend who insists that filling an ice cube tray with warm water will cause the cubes to form more quickly than they would if you started with cold water. He said it had something to do with the air circulation around the trays being affected by the temperature.

Not knowing much about frigidity myself, but being contrary, not to mention skeptical, by nature, I expressed doubt. Cecil, was I right, or is there indeed some basis in fact for this foolishness?

— Mary M.Q.C., Santa Barbarba, California

And the first part of his response...

Cecil replies:

You were smart to let me handle this, Mary. God knows what would happen if you tried to experiment with ice cubes on your own.

I mean, sheesh. :eyes:
