Food Nostalgia
Like a walk down memory lane..

I just received this catalog in the mail for the first time and was impressed with some of the
food offerings like their stews (Irish stew, Scotch Broth, Snapper with Sherry, etc.), but was
even more intrigued by the selection of treats I haven't seen since the 1950's and 60's like
Black Jack chewing gum, Walnettos (chewy caramel and walnut candies), Zagnut, B&M Brown Bread,
etc.). And then there are those old home remedies and beauty aids in their apothecary section.... Just fun to peruse this catalog, and thought I'd share.

3. Huh...I am surprised that so many like Skor. I've never tried that one.
One of my favorites is still Snickers, but in the 'old days' I used to love to throw a
Charleston Chewy in the freezer and then slam it on the table and eat it in frozen chunks.

Yes, it's fun to remember things like penny candy stores and childhood treats.
Unfortunately no room in my diet for many sweets anymore!

I do get excited by some of the newer healthier choices we have now. For instance, the other
day I tried for the first time a chip/cracker that was so amazingly delicious I was compelled to do something I've never done before. I immediately went to their website to let them know how blown away I was. The company is appropriately called, Food Should Taste Good (and they live up to it). It was a Multigrain chip made with Flax, Sunflower and Sesame Seeds, Oat Fiber, Brown Rice, Quinoa and Soy. Texture, flavor, just so good....
And a nice surprise - after entering my note of praise in their feedback section I was automatically
provided with a coupon for a dollar off of the next bag of chips.

4. A "certain person" who posts in this very group, turned Sparkly on to that company a few years ago.
I know because all this old time stuff started showing up at our house. Candies and cure-alls and old fashioned foods.

It is great fun and the old stuff they sell is just as you remember it.

Now who might that "certain person" have been ........ hmmmmmmm ........ who was that ......... ?

:)

5. lol....now all we need is the return of the old Sears Catalogs
Even more fun than cruising the internet.
You remember the one....as thick as a phone book that became a regular fixture on the coffee table,
with multiple earmarks made in the toy section by hopeful children playing the role of Santa's little helpers...

Dangerous!!!

And now this catalog with all that incredible sounding comfort food....! HELP!

6. Ever read a magazine called Reminisce?
My neighbor gets it and one of the recent issues had an article on the old Sears catalog, specifically on their house kits. Many of those houses are still standing and look better than what is being built today.

7. I'd forgotten about the house kits...

I'll bet there were/are whole neighborhoods built with those plans. I'm kind of partial to the Craftsman bungalows.

A little history on them from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Catalog_Home

The new modular homes have a similar 'kit' feeling to them.

8. Stinky, have you guys tried any of the food offerings like desserts or stews?
I'm very curious if they are as good as they sound.

I ordered the Irish Stew and the lemon pudding cake and will be able to answer my own
question, at least in part, very soon.
