Technique question - how do you store grapes? |
|
(and I don't mean liquify and ferment them)
I thought the website for the National Grape Council or whatever it is would explain, but no...
I like mine cool - not frozen, not warm. Grocery stores store them at whatever the veggie section is cooled at (65o?) I assume, at night covered, or moved to a similar area. I have no such area. My wife kept the in the colander I used to rinse them, stuck them in the fridge, and in two days they were proto-mush. Reaction to the metal? Doesn't explain grapes touching only other grapes. Should they be in the basement?

1. I keep them in the fridge unwashed and wash as we use them |
|
Washing fruit and then putting it in the fridge seems to cause it to turn bad quickly.

2. I agree with eleny; store unwashed... |
|
also, try "green bags"; they work pretty well for fruit. Though again, the fruit shouldn't be washed (or wet in any way) when being stored in a green bag.

3. I find water encourages nasties to grow on everything |
|
so if I wash it before I store it, I make sure it's completely dry.
I've always just kept grapes in their ventilated plastic baggie in the fridge. I wash them just before I eat them, when it doesn't matter if they're slightly damp.
Another thing, the only thing I keep in those "vegetable bins" in the bottom are cans and bottles of stuff. They call it the crisper. I find it's the slimer.

 That's been my experience, too, but I bought some of those plastic eggs at the coop, that are supposed to reduce sliming, they seem to have done so a bit.
I don't know what's in the "eggs" but I figured if they were at the co-op, they might not be full of nasty chemicals.

The only thing I keep in vegetable bins are potatoes and onions.

4. Nothing, nothing like a nice cold grape on a hot day! |
|
Bill's AC in his truck doesn't work very well and he was saving the ones I pack in his lunch for those hot drives home from work to cool off when temps were very high.
I leave them in the bag they come in in the fridge and then wash them when we're ready to use. They seem to keep well that way.
Very good to see you. :hi:
