Just had this great cheesecake at - don't laugh - the hospital |
|
Not the best I've ever had, but in the top 20%. Seriously. Of course, the even better thing is that I went to the hospital and returned. After a weekend of non-stop sleeping (starting Thursday night), I went in Monday for chemo, but had my wife drive me - I didn't think I could drive - was sweating, thought I was just sick - and they admitted me! It turns out I had some system bacterial blood infection, and I was in all week. Just got out today. I barely was mobile until Thursday, and it was only then that I started eating, and then just only fruit plates.
Anyway, back to the cheesecakse. It turns out that if you get a little chummy with one of the head dieticians, you get told about things most people don't know. The trick is, you go over the menu, and the magic words after something you say like "I really don't (feel) like any of that stuff" are "Do You Have Anything Else?"
Well, do they! In my case it was this great cheesecake - I think it was Amaretto, but it's hard to say not ever had an Amaretto cheesecake before. I've only had a handful of better cheesecakes.
Note: this trick doesn't just work for cheesecake, obviously - I used it to enhance my limited but critical dining experience across the board. Should work for you too!

2. Wow - I'm glad they caught it, |

and that you're better. And at home! The best place of all.
Now, here's the hard question - was that cheesecake really good or were you so hard up, anything would have tasted good?
In any event, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I learned, in the hospital, that making friends not only with the head dietician, but also with the kitchen staff, that you could get all sorts of things that don't appear on menus. When they were worried about my lack of appetite, the H.D. asked me about my favorite breakfast - I told her: eggs over medium in very hot butter with brown, crackllng edges, buttered white toast, and crisp bacon.
I got that meal whenever I wanted it - any time of day - and because I'd gotten to know the folks who labored (oh, do they have awful jobs!) in the kitchen, someone always ran with my tray to my room to make sure I got it while it was still hot.
Kindest people imaginable. You already know, Tab, because you're nice, that people react well to nice.
But, for now, enjoy being home, and just keep getting better and better.................. :toast:
