Making jam from canned fruit? |
|
My daughter sent me 2 qts. of home canned tart pie cherries. Unfortunately, the seals were broken in transit. I have put the cherries in the refrigerator for now, but am wondering if I could make jam from the canned cherries. She also sent me some cherry jam which is DIVINE, and I'm hoping I can use the canned cherries to make more. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

1. I don't know why you couldn't. |
|
Either that or make some tarts or pastries with them and freeze until you're ready to bake them. :hi:

but cherries are low in pectin, so you'll have to add quite a bit. If the canned cherries are sweetened, you might have to back off on the sugar, too.
Any good recipe should allow you to use the canned cherries. Just skip the cooking step because they're already cooked.

the cooking part? That's what makes it gel with the pectin and sugar?

4. You heat it, you don't have to cook it. |

5. They are not sweetened. So if I follow the recipe for cherry jam |
|
on the Certo package, it should be okay? I'd just bring the sugar, cherries and certo to a boil, and boil for 1 minute, then into the jars, then water bath? That would be fantastically easy.

Making jam and preserves is so easy. I haven't bought any from the store in about three years, except for a jar of Smuckers Black Raspberry because I hadn't had it in soooooo long and it was always my fave.
Go for it!

8. Thanks! Warpy and Hippiewife. I make lots of jam, jelly, and |

preserves from fresh fruit every year, but have never used canned fruit. I can't wait to get it made! Cherry jam is to die for.
