Has anyone else been buying South American fruit this year?
We have had cherries, peaches, nectarines, and pears. Maybe some other stuff. It has been really good, Really, really good. I know we're not supposed to buy this because of the transportation and all, but man ...... its been good. Maybe even better than the US grown stuff from last Spring/Early Summer.

1. It's all South American this time of year around here...
I've been getting mostly berries. Tasty ones they are, too.

Ain't many local papayas, mangos, pineapples or bananas around here, so if the boats and trucks can be running for them, they can run for the peaches and berries.

2. avocadoes from chile are here
I don't even look at the fresh fruit. I know the strawberries now are from California and also the raspberries. There were blueberries in the market today and I suppose they come from Chile. I just turn my head away and think of Al Gore. :-)

3. No.

This is when I stop buying grapes because they are now from Chile, and start buying citrus fruits from CA. I really wish there was local fruit available here, but there really isn't. Sigh.

As I've mentioned before, transportation isn't my only consideration, tho. I'm not so sure other countries have to follow our pesticide laws for growing, for the importers and companies who go there to grow, just to sell it here.

4. I looked at a tiny container of blueberries...

and gasped - $4.99! - a tiny container!

I realized that maybe part of my loving blueberries is because they aren't available year-round.
At least that's what I told myself.

5. I just tried some gigantic papayas from somewhere south of the border
and they're delicious and reasonably priced at $2.99.

6. It's also loaded with banned pesticides
but you're right, it's all excellent.

Yeah, I take the chance, too. I just don't overdo it like I do in summer.

7. All I Know Is ...
After eating our middle Tennessee strawberries, tomatoes, and blueberries all summer, buying fresh fruit in the grocery store seems like an exercise in futility.

8. Nope. Virtually all my produce is from CA or Mexico these days.
I'm trying to do fairly local eating anymore.

9. nope
Global warming, unknown but probably horrendous pesticide use.

The one exception I make for distant stuff is California and Florida citrus, since there is no citrus grown locally, and they (I hope) follow pesticide regulations. Speaking of which, Trader Joe's is carrying some mutant citrus called a cocktail grapefruit. Looks like a grapefruit, tastes like a sweet orange. Mmmm.
