Favorite Food Magazine?
I used to read Gourmet and Bon Appetit fairly regularly, but I tired of seeing frolicking white people always featured, laughing airily over their chilled chardonnay. The only ethic people you generally saw in Bon Appetit were the kitchen help (this may not be true now; I stopped reading it about 4 years ago).

I started reading Saveur, and I love it. Fantastic recipes, and when they feature ethnic food it isn't a Carefree White Persons version of it. It's well written and entertaining as well, and I love the featured photograph on the last page. If you haven't tried it yet, it's well worth getting a copy. Their holiday issue should be here soon, and I can't wait!

1. I'm pretty sure
Saveur is one of the mags commonly offered through one of those $5.00 subscription online deals. That's how I ended up subscribing.

I love Cooks Illustrated, the mag from America's Test Kitchen - though I now subscribe to their website http://www.cooksillustrated.com/ rather than the mag - so I can access all of the search capabilities in the archives. You actually get much of the website for free.

9. Definitely Cooks Illustrated.
Which reminds me, I need to renew my subscription.

They had a way to cook brown rice that is the best and easiest ever. Instead of the gummy mess that brown rice normally turns out to be, this stuff was excellent. Light, chewy, nutty, delicious!

14. I agree - Cook's Illustrated and ATK is the best
I subscribe to the website and I can instantly access any recipe. I then print it out and tape it up on my kitchen cabinet for eye-level reference.

I have never had a bad experience with any of their recipes. Also, Costco usually sells their fab cookbook, The Best Recipe for about half price.

2. You nailed it
Saveur is definitely my favorite food mag. Always packed full of info and great ideas.

I also tend to buy 'Fine Cooking' a lot too. Try it sometime.

Cooks Illustrated is what I would call 'servicable', but I've disagreed so often with the results of 'America's Test Kitchen', that there has to be something I'm really interested in featured in an issue for me to buy it.

I really dont like Chocolatier or Gourmet or Bon Appetit, but not for the reasons you noted. I dont like them because they never tell me anything new. Total waste of money, IMO.

8. Cooking Light has gotten annoying recently.
Too much hair and makeup.

OK, I understand the exercise and travel sections -- all part of a healthy lifestyle and all that. But beauty tips? Come on. It's mission creep.

6. Food and Wine is good
About 15 years ago, I made a recipe from Gourmet or Bon Appetit. It was for a version of tortelini, Mexican style.

First I has to make a Mexican pesto, of pumpkin seeds and cilantro, garlic, spices. Then the pasta dough from scratch, using spices which made it a beautiful 'terra cotta' color. Then the filling, chicken, olives, + some of the pesto. Then roll the dough, cut out circles, fill with filling and fold into "sombreros" (tortelini are supposedly popes' hats or something). Then whatever the sauce was using more of the 'pesto'.

The dish was so beautiful, with the terra cotta color. But it took all damned day, a million steps, and I thought, "I don't care if old husband likes it or not, I am NEVER making it again!"

Well, it was pretty good. Tasted about like a 69 cent can of chili.

12. I agree
I had the same experience with Gourmet. The stuff took forever to make and wasn't that good.

Saveur was great but I think my subscription has run out. For me it's just Cooks Illus. and Food and Wine now.

11. Italian Cooking and Living
This may be a regional magazine, I'm not sure.

Good recipes, but more, they talk a lot about ingredients, food, Italian regions, customs, etc.

I am a foodservice professional (former chef, now a restaurant designer) so I'm kinda jaded. But this magazine makes great reading and I learn a lot from it. My Italian background also probably prejudices me a bit.
