Deviled eggs and deviled ham.

Where did "deviled" come from and what does it mean as applied to food items?

I have no idea. Thanks for the help.

1. Devilled ..... = ...... hot
Devilled ..... = ...... hot ........ in a gentle way :)

It is basically a chopped 'salad' with mustard as a key ingredient.

Our sense of 'hot' these days makes the notion of mustard as a 'hot' item ..... 'quaint'.

7. Seriously .... there are commercial hot sauces sold that have a poison
symbol on them.

They're several million (up to maybe 7 or 8 million) scoville units and are used to add heat to large batches (hundreds of gallons) of food product. They are, indeed, poison because of their concentration, but in the end, they're still just capsicum.

They sometimes show up in stores that sell lots of different hot sauces, but the times I've seen them, they've been under lock and key. I'm actually very much opposed to allowing these to be sold unregulated. They would, I can imagine, be very attractive to the overly testosteroned among us. And that gets them out there as a 'joke'. These products are decidedly unfunny.

I've never tried that stuff I posted. I have some Dave's Insanity, though, and that's more than I need. I'd rather use more of a milder product than fear overdosing on the concentrated stuff.

And that's what these extra hot items are ... concentrated. Scotch bonnets and habaneros are supposedly the hottest natural pepper and they're only in the 400,000 scoville range, although there's supposed to be one specific type of habanero that goes up to about 700,000.

If you ever find PeppaPoo .....

Buy it! It is crushed scotch bonnets and vinegar. Hot but not a killer, it has a nice flavor once you get past the hot. Compared to Dave's Insanity, this is pretty mild. I like it on Pad Thai. I use maybe a teaspoon on a dish of it.
