I think my hard drive just died.
Am I screwed? My PC just froze and now it won't reboot. The hard drive squeaks when I try to reboot. I have another hard drive, but my backups haven't been running properly.

1. Certainly sounds like a HD crash.
Can you boot through the CD?

2. I can boot to CD but am having trouble getting it to recognize
my backup hard drive. Not having a good night and feeling very sorry for myself. I'm using my daughter's laptop and drinking.

3. If you have vital files you need to retrieve
don't just toss the hard drive into the trash- there are things an expert can do to at least partially revive a disk long enough to copy the data. This isn't always true, and it isn't always 100% successful, but I've personally managed to get it done a few times for clients.

Take the hard drive to a local computer repair expert if you need a data recovery attempt done. Most will be able to at least advise you. Just don't sit there endlessly trying to boot the drive- it can be doing more damage every time.

4. Thanks. That's my plan. I'm trying to get it to recognize what was
the backup drive now.
