Computer doesn't detect scanner - what am I doing wrong?
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 09:27 PM by Skip Intro
I bought this scanner the same place I bought my computer - a thrift store.

I was told everything was tested and working and warranteed for 60 days.

I couldn't be happier with the computer ($125!), suits my needs fine. But this scanner -

There wasn't an install disc, and I used the "Add New Hardware" option on the control panel to have the computer detect the scanner - but it doesn't. Everything is plugged in. I'm at a loss.

Also, the scanner (I've never used one) has only one button. Its not labeled. I assumed it was a power button, but it doesn't turn the thing off or on. Then I assumed you'd press this button when you wnated to scan whatever you'd placed on the glass - but nothing seems to make the components inside the scanner move, and that button seems to do nothing.

I consider myself almost a newbie when it comes to computers, so I don't know if I've gotten ahold of something that just doesn't work, or if its me that's doing somehting wrong.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

1. You will need
to find a driver for it. Check for information somewhere on the scanner to find what the name brand is and it should also say something like
MICROTEK SCANMAKER S-400. Then you will have to do a search on google or go here. http://www.driverguide.com/
I would also ask where you bought it to find out how they know it works if it did not have a driver?

2. Thanks for the help
Found the driver and downloaded it (from a place called opendriver or opendrivers) and installed it, but there doesn't seem to be any way to access the scanner.

I'll just call those guys tomorrow and ask them about it.

Thanks again for the help.

3. Is your scanner USB? SCSI? What kind?
If it runs off an SCSI card sometimes XP won't recognize it unless the scanner is turned on BEFORE you reboot your computer. Try that first.
