All of a sudden, I have no icons on my desktop, just the words. I can
still click on those words, but what happened to the icons? Also, on the Start menu, the icons don't come up, just this:

1. I'm not real good at this, but a couple basics:
have you tried shutting down and restarting - oh I see you posted this morning - did you get it fixed? If not what have you tried to do? I'm pretty sure there is an easy place to set icons - you can right click on the "titles" and click properties and if there is a shortcut tab click that and down towards the bottom middle is a change icon button....

2. Icon cache
Right click on desktop and choose "Refresh". If that doesn't work then reboot as was suggested above.

It's not terribly unusual for Windows to do things like this due to the way it caches icons. Worst comes to worst, which I doubt it will, there are ways to force Windows to rebuild its icon cache. Keep us posted!

3. One other thing to try
Shut down and restart in safe mode, and then restart normally. This (if I'm recalling correctly) forces a rebuild of the desktop (in particular, the icon folder)

4. Try this ... change the screen color depth
Doing that should rebuild the icon cache.

Here's how to do it:

Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

Select the "Settings" tab.

Change the "Color Quality" and hit the "Apply" button. Change it back to the original setting and hit "Apply" again.
(for example: change it to 16-bit and apply, then change it back to 32-bit and apply)

Click the "OK" button.

They should be fine now. :-)

6. Thanks for that tip!
I wasn't aware of that method.

5. Thanks for the responses--I shut down my computer then turned it back on--
that seemed to do the trick. It just freaked me out when I saw only printing and no icons, as I'd never seen that before.
Thanks again!
