It's a puzzelment.
For one week now, I have been unable to view Firedoglake.com. At first I just thought it was busy because of the primary action on June 3rd. When it persisted over the next day, I took my laptop up to the computer shop.

No problem accessing the site from there. Nothing untoward found on my machine either. Just can't access the site from home.

I get the 'site timed out' error'. Have checked my firewall & AVG & can't see anything there to cause this. I use Mozilla. I have no trouble accessing the rest of the Net. Anyone got an idea of how to
fix this?

Agent Mike: Are you standing on my toobz?

1. try this

instead of th URL type in 221.112.168.115

I pinged the site and got that as the IP address. It may be a DNS issue if you can get with the regular address and not the URL.

3. alright--here is the next step
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 10:42 PM by Gore1FL
open a command prompt

(Start-Run, and then type cmd in the box -- if you are using VISTA just click start and put CMD in the search box.)

when you get to the command prompt type tracert www.Firedoglake.com

This will tell you where is fails on the network.

paste the last few lines of the response in your next post and we'll go from there.

On Edit: the way you can copy and paste from this screen is to right-click, select mark. the highlight the lines of text. right click the banner and select edit-copy.

6. kddn is where I a guessing the problem is
you are going over their network segment and it is dying.

you might want to let them know

http://www.kddi.com/english/business/index.html

I'd send them your tracert, (you might want to give them all of it from line 1 on) and ask them if there is something wrong on their end.

something else you could try... is change your DNS server to a public one like 4.2.2.3, 199.2.252.10 or 208.67.220.220

assuming you are using XP, you can get there through control panel, click the network connections icon, right click the network connection you are using and select properties. On the "General tab, you'll see a list. Scroll down until you see Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and highlight it. Click the properties button.

There are two radio buttons on that screen. The bottom set has one that reads "use the following DNS server addresses"

enter in one (or two) of the addresses I listed above and click OK. If it doesn;t work, you can easily change it all back by reselecting the the automatic DNS option.

8. I was thinking about this a little more
I doubt the DNS changes are going to do anything for you because we already established the IP address wasn't working.

I had no idea firedoglake.com was in Japan.

10. It's not...but the servers may be.
I think Jane Hamsher lives near DC and it's her site. They did a revamp recently and I think kkdi could be the server service they might have gone with. When I went to try to contact kkdi, I saw they're a Japanese company with no contact available to the common folk.

I went up the street to my library after my last post and guess what? No Problem. Connected right away.
So it's not my computer and it's not my cable -or I wouldn't be able to go everywhere else on the net from home, Right?

I just have a sick feeling it's Charter blocking it because I'm not with "George's" program. That's what I'm going to look into next. Buck Fush and the horse he's afraid to ride in on.

Ping this IP address and report back.

61.122.114.81

OnEdit: Sorry ... forgot to give instructions. Do all the same stuff you did for the tracert, but type the command 'ping' followed by that IP address.

FYI, Agent Mike isn't after you.

5. Who is your ISP?
A friend of mine noticed that Comcast was blocking access to some sites on his.

7. ISP is Charter.
They recently announced they were tracking their customers on the web. "To target ads" was the excuse.
It did occur to me that Charter may not like my 'politics' and are blocking FDL.:hippie:

Tried to call them earlier today. The tech line they gave out last week is 'no longer in service'.

12. Do you use HiJackthis?
Could be that Charter has installed some sort of proxy override deal. Also, you might see if you can open the site with a different Browser, like (ick) Internet Explorer.

Definitely clear you cache and all that usual stuff.

13. Update
It's quite wonderful to be able to ask for and receive help. You all were quick and generous. And I appreciate it. :loveya:

The dilemma was resolved when I <at the end of my tattered rope> emailed JH at FDL last night. She kindly got her FDL tech person to look into it. Apparently in their recent move to these servers, some IPs were blocked in error. I am now able to access the site.

How can anyone not love the 'toobz' and all the great DFH's that swim therein?
