Camera or Computer problem? I just returned from France with |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-15-08 04:35 PM by yy4me
what I thought were great photo's. Have used the Nikon Cool pix L11. Even though I am digitally challenged, I have used the camera before and downloaded the photo's to my computer to e-mail to family and to print out. Well this time, as it was finished downloading, I deleted the photos from the camera card in reply to the "do you wish to delete the photos from your memory card?--or whatever it said. I said yes, seeing I was going to print them myself. Well now it seems that I cannot e-mail the pictures or do anything but look at them in "my pictures". I get a message that tells me I am missing a component. What am I missing--I've done this before without this message. Is it because I deleted the pictures from the memory card?
So far as I can tell, I have done nothing else. What do you think, camera or Computer? Yes, its me and I know you are all saying it was the operator. This computer is giving me so many small but annoying problems as of late that I'm about ready to call in someone to do a real clean-it-up.
BTW, do a large number of sites saved in "favorites" slow this thing down? For a broadband connection, its more like 2 Gerbils in a wheel, generating a lot of noise and no power.
HP Pavilion 526X XP2 IE6 512mb Very little use, all AGV Ad-Aware,SpywareBlaster, Spybot S & D.
If you think it is the camera, I'll ask on that forum. Thanks

1. Well, I can answer one question |
|
First, if you can give us the wording of the actual error message you get, in full, when you try to access the pictures, it might help someone to find the component you are missing. Also, when do you get it (what are you doing when the error message comes up)?
As for the favorites, the number of favorites you have should have no impact on the speed of the computer. What I've found when computers are running slow in nearly every case is a preponderance of programs loading at startup that are unnecessary (often spyware but not necessarily) and use up resources. Good spyware scanners I recommend is Spybot S&D with full updates and AdAware scans with full updates. If you update those programs and run full scans and don't find anything we can look at other extraneous programs starting up.
You can also run a program called HijackThis, available at shareware sites like download.com and filehippo.com that will gather information and create a log of everything that's running on the computer. There are a number of places on the web where you can submit that log and people can take a look at it and tell you if you are running anything that might be causing problems, spyware-wise.
You yourself can click on Start | Run and type msconfig and hit enter to get a program that will let you see what is starting up on your computer and running. The startup tab will tell you what is starting when you boot up and log into your computer.
Finally, slowness can be caused by problems on the network, as a machine having to wait a long time for a network resource or Internet site to finally load can allocate more and more processor cycles to try to complete the task and run slower and slower in the process.

2. I use this for startup programs. It's Microsoft owned and free |
|
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspxI use this when I build images to find things I don't want, ad then kill them in the registry. It's a bit advanced for a typical user, though. I am not familiar with Hijack This. I'll have to check it out.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting it.
What I do like about HiJackThis is that there are a number of sites on the web where techies put their heads together looking over a log from someone in trouble and come up with a way to fix the problem. The software provides the common printout of what is installed and running on the computer.

3. Never ever delete irreplaceable pictures in your camera until you are sure |
|
they are safely on your computer. And even then wait a bit. Have you tried copying them to another folder, either one at a time or all at once? Can you bring them up in a picture program and do a 'Save as'?
Irfanview is a good free picture viewer and does cropping, rotation and minor adjustments. It's my default viewer.

5. Found that out the hard way. This weekend, I am planning to try |
|
every possible thing I can to get these photo's to some other part of the computer that will allow me to work with them. I am so dumb with all things electronic but this one was my own fault. I should never have deleted them. I know that now and should have then. Keep you posted.
