Suggestions for webhosting?
Looking for high uptimes, multiple IP, reasonable but not blazing speed (won't rule it out, just don't want to pay for it) and CHEAP.

This is for a couple of not for profit sites.

Looking for success and avoid this stories. If you are a re-brander and want to sell your space please make sure your interface is transparent and non-duplicative to the source.

thanks!

1. I just switched to discountasp.net. So far so good.
I tried GoDaddy.com for awhile because they're the cheapest, but later found out it has restrictions that prevent any serious work from getting done. And is was also SLOW when any server side processing was required.

Discountasp.net meets my needs because they have the very latest .Net environment, including SQL server 2008 beta for free. Many webhost providers don't even let you do AJAX.

I think the real issue is how you want to develop the site. Are you expecting some kind of easy to use authoring tool? Or do you do the coding yourself? You didn't even mention whether you want a Linux or IIS server....

2. My needs will be pretty basic at this point
as it is for a not for profit that has no product to distribute and only needs the most basic of info distributed. I will most likely use set scripts that are available on site, though I am fairly proficient with Dreamweaver if I need to - I don't much care for scripts so might do the set up myself.

Since my needs don't extend much beyond fundamental web pages and some php for a messageboard I don't have a preference re: Linux or IIS, etc.

thanks!

5. Sounds like you'd be fine with Linux
I'm not really into Dreamweaver or Linux myself. And you probably want a site with good authoring tools.

Microsoft offers Visual Web Developer Express, which is free, and provides more flexibility than a site that has website builders. Even though it's getting easier, it still involves having the mindset of a programmer. The hosts mentioned below will probably work out better than Discountasp.net because they probably have better tools you can use yourself. I'm not even sure if my webhost has any. It's mainly for ASP developers.

There are lots of advantages to coding the site. You can provide unqiue services that people can't find anywhere else.

You can combine servers too. You can create your own front end using the tools mentioned below, and also offer a web application that does fancy things on another server. The user would not even know they're going to another server without looking at the address bar.

So I'd suggest starting out with the services mentioned below so you can create a front end on your own. If you have any ideas for extra help or applications let me know. I'll PM you with a little more info.

3. I use this outfit
http://www.ixwebhosting.com/index.php/v2/pages.dspmain

Been using them about 3 years now and cannot remember the last time my site was down. I run a discussion board on it using the same php program used by DU and though I have low traffic it has run without a hitch and the cost $36 for 3 months is very reasonable in my opinion.

4. I highly recommend Dreamhost.
I cannot say enough good about them. Been with them for years and they just keep getting better. $5.95 a month for their base hosting plan. They have other packages as well, and all are chock-a-block with features.

6. Thanks
I used them for a site a few years ago. I no longer manage that entity but I liked their service. Glad to hear they are still a good, reliable option.
