Saving webpages permanently
How can web pages be saved so that there is a permanent record in case the original site is deleted/goes dead? Which format in IE is better, mht or htm or html?

I would like to be able to save a multipage (40+ pgs) thread so that it can be reread offline and is preserved permanently.

Several formats are available in IE; which create a permanent record vs. simply linking to the original webpage?

1. "Save As Web Archive" (mht) in Opera, or "Save Page" as "Web File, complete" in Firefox.
IE? blech. But still, mht.

Sometimes it takes more magic than that, especially with embedded content. To grab certain kinds of embedded stuff you'll need special plugins -- video downloaders, etc. -- that don't comply with Microsoft's vision of Digital Rights Management, but are nevertheless quite easily installed in Firefox or Opera.

Another way that works very well for me is to "print" out the web page as a pdf file. All my computers have virtual printers that save print output directly as pdf files. I've been using pdfFactory on Microsoft machines for many years now. (Pdf capability is native on my Linux machines.)
