Bios Screen and auto mouse deletes everything!!!!
Well...evertime I turn on the computer it boots to the bios screen (after the intel desktop flashes by). If I just save and exit changes (I don't see any changes) it moves on to windows. If I just hit cancel it stays in bios. Once I get to windows the mouse automatically deletes everthing I click on. I will receive multiple boxes asking if I really want to delete a file or program. Very wierd stuff. I tried to access the safe mode but could not do it. It just continues to boot to the bios screen. I went to the msconfisys.exe and did a selective boot and the mouse thing seems to have gone away. But, I still can't get to the safe mode. The bios screen still coming up evertime I boot.
I have a windows xp, 2 gigs of ram and 3 gig processor.
Could be my mother board battery is dieing? Before this happened I installed a MS Intellepoint Wireless Mouse. I also ran an MS Malicouse Spyware Removal Scan. I also tried to install a Bob the Builder game for the kids...but that did not seem to have worked.

1. Try hooking up your old mouse again and see if it boots

2. That's the first thing I tried.
I also deleted the software for the wireless mouse. It stopped after I did the selective boot thing and stopped the mouse software from booting. But I still get the bios screen on reboot. I can get past it and into windows, but only if I save changes and exit.

4. I tried the system restore
on two different restore points. Niether of the restore points worked. I wonder if the mouse software could corrupt the bios?

5. Do you have a spare motherboard battery you could try?
Although you said if you alter the startup config, it starts ok, so not likely to be the battery.

Do you have a disk from any prior bios flashing? Maybe a re-do?

Oh, and do you have a floppy start up disk (you know the kind that is made during Win install and it asks you if you want to make a floppy start up disk? that one)

6. After I altered the start up (and deleted the new software)
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 11:36 AM by Steerpike1
the mouse seems to work ok. I'm at work now so I'll have to check it when I get home. I'm just worried that at startup the bios screen keeps popping up. The "Intel Desktop" keeps flashing by also, which it never did before.

And I am ashamed to admit I do not have a startup floppy....

7. Here's what I would do:
1) pick up a spare mb battery, just because they are handy to have around for times like this for troubleshooting; same for some canned air for blowing dust out

2) while at work, if you can, find the latest bios update for your mb and make a floppy so you can flash the bios

3) go get a copy of Hijack This from Trend Micro and run it - it will tell you everything that your system is doing when it's starting up, a good diagnostic tool

8. Good advice!
I was thinking along those lines for my next move.
