What am I doing wrong with Printer sharing? |
|
We have two computers. My computer is hooked to the wireless router and the printer. My son accesses the internet with a wireless adapter. He would like to be able to print to my printer. Both computers are running XP. I've run the network connections wizard I don't know how many times on both computers. I've turned on printer sharing at my computer. I still can't get the printer to show up on my son's computer.
What am I doing wrong? I googled and googled and followed the instructions I've found on a bazillion web pages, but still can't get it to work!
Thanks for any and all help. :)

1. It sounds like you have already done this |
|
The steps are 1. In control panel, printers & faxes, right click on the printer and select share 2. On your son's computer go to printers & faxes, Add Printer, select network printer and follow the wizard.
All should be good to go. You didn't say if you had established a network between the two computers. Was running the network setup wizard successful?

2. Just a wag, but are there firewall issues? |
|
Does the router have any settings that might be getting in the way?

I'm wired to the router and he uses it wireless.
One other thing. I can see the files and folders that I'm sharing from my computer on his computer, so I know we're networking somehow.

5. Try this (another wag) |
|
Find your printer and right click on it, look under Properties, Security and see what it looks like in terms of who can have access and at what level.

From the PC with the printer attached, determine the name of the PC if you don't already know it. Right-click on "My Computer", select "Properties", and look on the "Computer Name" tab to find it.
Next, determine the share name of your printer. Open printers and faxes, right-click on your printer and select properties. Click the "sharing" tab to find the printer "shared as" name. If it is not shared, you have most likely found your problem.
From your son's PC, run the add printer wizard. When it prompts to add a local or network printer, select network printer. Click next, then select "Connect to this printer" button and type into the box, "\\computer name\printer shared as name" as found in the previous steps and click next. The computer and printer share names must be entered exactly as you saw them in the earlier steps. If there are spaces, use spaces; if not, do not.
Hopefully you will then get prompted to install the printer driver which means the printer is now available for your son to use.

Followed your instructions, and Eureka! I can print from my son's computer!
Thanks a million. I had resorted to emailing documents in order to open and print, that was a PAIN!
