Under the Hood, Windows 7 Is Vista's Twin
Under the Hood, Windows 7 Is Vista's Twin
Randall C. Kennedy, InfoWorld

Nov 10, 2008 5:15 pm

At Microsoft's recent Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles, the air crackled with anticipation. On the heels of Vista, arguably the biggest disaster in Microsoft's history, Windows 7 was about to be revealed. A blast of fanfare, and Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie took the stage to pull the wraps off the new desktop operating system--which would deliver better performance, an improved user experience, and some nifty media-sharing features. The crowd salivated at the chance to play with Microsoft's latest and greatest.

<...>

Bottom line: So far, Windows 7 looks, behaves, and performs almost exactly like Windows Vista. And it breaks all sorts of things that used to work just fine under Vista. In other words, Microsoft's follow-up to its most unpopular OS release since Windows Me threatens to deliver zero measurable performance benefits while introducing new and potentially crippling compatibility issues.

Well, I guess now is the time to start rolling out Linux on all my workstations.

1. It will look like Vista, but is actually compartmentalized...
"Min-Win" being the core, and having more SAAS items... which means you'll want faster broadband and lots of annual money for the subscription service.

I still say SAAS makes an ASS out of everyone wanting to use it. There's no real "ownership".

14. Sorry but Vista doesn't suck.
If your system can handle it, it works just fine. I've been using it since it was released.I do a lot of shit to my system and have not had any issues.

3. So here we have an idiot using a PRE BETA

4. You could reverse that statement on to Microsoft-
marketing a product when it is in a Pre-Beta state. Even Mark Russinovich has stated that Windows 7 will not bring much to the table beyond what Vista has brought. Randall Kennedy is far from an idiot. His has found some very interesting performance particulars in Microsoft products dating back to NT 4. What are your credentials? - just sayin'.

8. Yeah, that works well...
Vista went through Alpha, Beta and RC, and RC2 releases... A multitude of testers noted problems that need to be corrected prior to gold code status. Microsoft ignored the feedback and released the turd anyway. They were too greedy and wanted to push it out the door before it was ready for prime time.

7. Well, the next time a beta release of SUSE LINUX comes out, I'll use that philosophy too.
And likely get crucified by the robotic fanatic linux fanboys too, no doubt.

The SuSE community is very critical of Novell.

All Windows fanboys have to do to find crap to say about SuSE is visit one of the SuSE forums and copy/paste. With SuSE 10.1, the whole system was declared utter garbage by most people I ran across from alpha all the way through gold master, some of the critcs having been SuSE drones since the original fork. In its initial form, it was the worst Linux distro I ever installed.

5. There are problems with it ...

That's basically what he said. If that translates to "it sucks" so be it, but that's sorta the point.

If a "pre-beta" gets released to anyone, the point of doing so is (or at least should be) to put it through the paces and figure out what needs to be done with it to make it work properly.

Using this term "pre-beta" is all the rage these days, but it's sorta backfired. What we have here is an alpha release. Who doesn't expect issues with an alpha release? Anything with an "alpha" label on it surprises me if it even starts, and if it does start, I then go about messing with it to figure out where it's going to crash on me so I can file a bug report if I'm so inclined.

If Microsoft doesn't want that, they shouldn't release these things to *the press* for pity's sake.

So, yeah, it's a pre-beta/alpha and is expected to have problems. If the developers would just admit that up front rather than slapping this "pre-beta" label on it, as though it is somehow more advanced than what alpha implies, and embarking on its own PR blitz talking about its wonders, the negative slant reviewers take might not be so great.

(Booming, godlike voice) "Behold, I bestow upon thee the Flame of the West so that you may conquer evil and reclaim the throne!"

(fake British accent) "Whut? But this is just a butter knife."

"No! It is the Flame of the West! Go now and vanquish evil!"

"Piss off, ya git. It's not even the Spark of the West-Northwest. It's a butter knife, and now that I look at it, it's not even stainless steel. It's shiny plastic."

As I've said in a different way before, that's really one of Vista's problems. Microsoft is so hot on labeling itself the greatest thing since packaged bread yeast that they immediately wander into flat-out dishonesty when presenting their products to the public. I'd be far less critical of, for example, the actual system requirements for running their OS acceptably if they'd just be up-front about the fact, yeah, you need at least 2 GB of RAM, or you're going to think this is a turkey.

But, no, 'cause there is just way too much money to be made in deceptive advertising.

12. The comments make it even better
12 seconds of Lolz Stoopid goosed the Youtube braintrust into a Windows vs Linux vs Mac vs XBox vs PS3 vs OMG Teh Ghey pitched battle.

Hardly unexpected, but still...

I do so enjoy watching them make mush meat of each other. It's like the circus without the smell of elephant droppings.
