I read everywhere that, we're about to see a mini-boom due to large number of overseas jobs returning to the US. Any thoughts?

1. Can't help with the answer, can only ask another question
While I hope it's true that these jobs will be returning, what's the evidence that it's more than just wishful thinking?

When I see these tons of layoff notices, I also see plenty of companies doing the laying-off only in this country, not their overseas operations. The exception is to see it affecting overseas.

So why would they return? Tax breaks or something?

3. It was a topic of discussion on CNBC...
...Don't remember much about it, just that they were saying that many companies are getting rid of their off-shore operations and looking more to, what they termed, "Organic talent". I take that to mean local, or intra-company stuff.

2. Let see....
yesterday I was laid off after 22+ years. On Monday I start my new job as a contractor on a month to month basis for the same company. So not very secure.

I handle(d) the help desk/build PC's and Servers/technical support. There are two other people who could, by taking them from the primary tasks, the jobs. The company I worked for has about 45-50 people, depending on how you count and has expansion plans. So it might turn out to be profitable for me. 23 weeks severance, 6 weeks vacation pay, and a contract to work for the same base pay I was( well 28.9 cents more per hour).

6. I'm a software engineer for my County's IT department.
The job I had before this, with a private company, no longer exists and the company closed its doors.

The job I had before that no longer exists as the company closed its doors.

Our county's departments had to cut 5% for the current fiscal year. This was primarily accomplished by not filling vacancies and not creating new positions. No layoffs thus far.

I've been told that the county rarely resorts to layoffs.

10. What is your area?

If you don't mind my asking ... Network engineer/System admin? Something along those lines?

I'm mostly just curious about this whole subject. I have a friend in DC who was just laid off after 15 years with his company, one of those affected directly and severely by the recent financial mess. He's a database designer and administrator and has spent the last several years as a project head.

He made a more than comfortable salary with excellent benefits and, without any real warning, was simply let go two Friday's ago along with everyone in his department. All the work is being outsourced to contractors now.

Anyway ... he's in a total state of shock at the moment and not thinking clearly about his options. I'm kinda curious what his options actually are.
