It happens with my browser (Firefox), and on Word, but not in AIM.

The italics are pushed to together to the point of being completely unledgible

1. Being an amateur fontographer
this is pretty interesting.

Try first going to your Mozilla tools, Options. Select content tab and fonts and colours - Advanced.

There is a check box - Allow web pages to use their own font etc. Make sure that is checked and see what happens.

As far as MS word goes, it seems that normal.dot has somehow been changed. Easiest way to find it - search C drive for normal.dot, open it up, change the default font, size etc and save again as normal.dot. It's usually found in Docs and settings under the user name.
