Help with networking setup (wireless maybe?) |
|
I know zip about local networking so need some advice. Our local Telco has informed us they will be making DSL available in our boonie area (FINALLY!) :D They've sent the DSL modem already but the DSL isn't yet turned on so I have a bit of time to hop on the learning curve. We have 2 computers that are just 50 feet or so apart that we'd like both to get hooked up. We COULD run a wire but it would be kind of a pain and I'm wondering if it would be better to go with a wireless setup... So what exactly do I need to get? Is a 'router' something we will need? Is that the same as a 'switch'? Is there something like a 'starter kit' that will have all the stuff we need? (I did some googling but there's so MUCH out there I'm info overloaded!) Figured some kind DUer would be able to 'splain it to a DUmmy like me. Thanks

1. You're on the right track |

You'll need a wireless router (I recommend you stay away from Linksys products-- their quality control sucks, and they have a very high out-of-the-box failure rate for home networking products). You'll also need a wireless card for the distant computer-- if you put the router next to one of your computers you can simply run a cable to it from the router, and save the price of a wireless card.
Another option is a USB wireless receiver for the distant computer-- all you have to do is plug it into a USB port and install the drivers. Read the router handbook for connection instructions-- home networking is straightforward, so don't let it scare you.
The wiring route is like this: from the phone line to the DSL modem, from the modem to the router, from the router to the computers (either wired or wireless- a combination is acceptable). The router can be configured via a software interface that's installed by using the cd that's included.

2. Thanks! I hadn't thought about wire to 1 & wireless to the other, |
|
that would be simple. I like the USB receiver idea, the 2nd computer has 6 ports so it should be fairly simple. I'm pretty good with hardware, just new to the networking part. Thanks again K
