MS Outlook XP Pro
Does anyone use this for their email? I love it since it has calendar, journal, contacts, etc. & I'm self-employed.

BUT, one thing is driving me crazy. When I right-click on a folder, the option to rename that particular folder is shaded, so I can't rename it. The program is telling me I have to have owners permission to change the folder names. Well, I am the owner. Duh!

I've searched & searched. I've read everything I can find at Microsoft's worse than useless database, I've checked every online troubleshooting site I can find, I've done everything I can think of & still can't find the answer.

Does anyone here know? I would really like to change the names of some of the folders & also delete one or two-that option is also shaded & won't let me. In fact, I can't 'remove', 'delet', or 'rename' any of the folders.

1. What folders are you trying to rename?
The ones that Outlook creates - Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, etc. CANNOT be renamed. You can create your own folders, and rename those.

2. I was trying to rename
Inbox & Deleted items. Do you know why they can't be renamed? The older versions could. At least, I found a back way in & did it.

MS drives me nuts. Why can't I rename or delete certain folders, huh, Mr Gates?

Thanks for the quick response, trotsky. I guess I can quit fooling with it now.

3. You could do it in older versions of Outlook
using their generic "Exchange" client (exchng32.exe). But newer versions don't allow for this, for some stupid reason.

4. That's how I did it before:
using exchng32.exe. I just went in & changed it around to fit my needs.

Do you know if Office 2000 allows you to change the names? I can get a copy of it. In fact, I've read several posts from people who like 2000 way better than XP Pro. I've never read why anyone likes it better, just that they do.

Thanks for all your help.

5. I haven't found any features worth upgrading from Office 2000.
Well, Outlook 2003 does have one nice feature but it's only useful when you are connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server over a flaky connection.

Unfortunately 2000 doesn't come with the exchng32.exe utility either. I suppose it might still be possible somehow but I'm not aware of how. You vill like zee names Bill gives you!

6. Are you certain your logon account has admin rights?
Try logging on as Administrator in Safe Mode With Networking, and see if it will work from there. Outlook is fully functional in Safe Mode.

While in Safe Mode, you can also assign rights to your normal logon account via the Control Panel. You might want to check to see if somehow your rights have been lessened to that of User instead of Administrator.

7. Trotsky indicated
that I can't change the names since billy boy set it up that way, but you seem to be saying that I can. Now I'm confused.

I went to control panel & clicked on users. There's an administrator listed, plus my name. My name is listed as an administrator.

BTW, the OS is Windows 2000 professional.

is confusing Windows folders with Outlook folders.

9. Got it!
Thanks trosky. You're the best.

Now I'm gonna call microworst & give 'em a piece of my mind for their crap products.

Swear to god, if I never saw anything with 'microworst' on it again, I'll die a happy woman.
