Help ... can't boot into Windows |
|
after a my laptop totally froze, i powered it down ...
now, on boot up, i get the Windows splash screen and the progress bar moves about half way from left to right but then freezes ...
i've tried Safe Mode but after displaying a bunch of text, that freezes too ...
sooooo, i put a Windows 2000 CD in the drive to boot from there ...
it's offering the following choices: 1. press ENTER to setup Windows 2000 2. press R to repair a Windows 2000 installation 3. press F3 to quit without installing Windows 2000
Question 1: if i chose option 1, will that completely re-install Windows and will i lose everything on the hard drive ?
Question 2: i tried choosing option 2 and it asked me if i have an Emergency Repair Disk ... unfortunately, i don't ... the other repair alternative was to repair from the Console ... after entering an admin password, i got to a command prompt ... what do i do then ??
Question 3: is there any other way to get the machine to boot ???

1. If You Select "No" When The Installer... |
|
asks you if you have an ERD, it will attempt to locate your install anyway. If it finds your install you can attempt a repair from there. when you boot to "Safe Mode" that text a display of the files that are loading as windows starts. What is the last line displayed when the machine locks?

thanks so much for the help ... i was able to use the repair option without an ERD to get back into Windows ...
now, i seem to be having a few new problems ...
it keeps trying to run Windows Installer and apparently no longer can find my installation of Microsoft Office ...
it also is looking for "Seagate Crystal Reports" and it also doesn't seem to see my wireless card ...
do i need to reinstall whatever software the installer is looking for as well as my wireless card?

Could I hazard to guess that you are using a Dlink wireless card? Maybe a 520+?
