PORK PORK oh wait a minute that's not it HELP HELP HELP
The do it yourself bug has stuck, I'm somewhere between a rock and a hard place. How I gor back here I'm not really sure, but I made it.
Okay, here's what's happening, I've been running on a four gig hard drive, and I'm just about maxed out, so when a shiny new 80 gig caught my eye I jumped at it.
I spent yesterday afternoon installing and changing and changing and doing this that and the other thing, but I couldn't get this computer to boot up.
So, I slept on it, sort of.
This morning, I pulled the drive cage, swotched the new drive to the top, and the old to the bottom. I placed the jumpers to make the new drive the master and the old the slave.
I plugged in the IDE cables, black to the master, grey to the slave, plugged in the power cables, and in desparation put in the 98 cd, along with the floppy, and hit power.
Everything came back, but the new drive is not being recognized because I have to change cmos, and I haven't a clue what to do once I get there.
So after I get into cmos, what do I do?
Also, I don't know why, my music player isn't working, when I turn on the speakers I get a rhythmic thump like the drive spinning,
I'm all messed up.

1. well how old is the motherboard?
do you know?

I know that older BIOS's don't support large drives and on some you have to manually configure the drive through the BIOS.

Hold down the DEL key when you start it up, that will get you to the configuration screens that you need to be in.

let me know if this helps.

2. Take a deep breath and goodle your eyes off. :D
I plugged in the IDE cables, black to the master, grey to the slave,
This is from the two headers on the same cable, right?
If not, this could be one problem.
If the second hard drive is attached to *another* header, it should be set as master(probably not since mose folks hook up the CDROM to the second header as master).
Your new drive should only be set to slave or cable select if it is attached to the same ribbon cable as your other hard drive.

Adjusting your bios is relatively straightforward, but I'd read up on it as much as possible before you start.
When your computer boots up you should get a line something like "press Delete/Del key to...".
Hold down the delete key until something happens.
(it could be the F8 key, instead)

This will bring up your bios screen.
It's been a while since I messed with an older bios, but basically you need to make sure the motherboard is "seeing" the hard drive.
Sometime you have to get this to happen manually.

Once it "sees" the hard drive, you'll need to format it from a Dos prompt... again... its been awhile.

There are undoubtedly programs to help facilitate this happening with greater ease.

Good luck.
Cletus

3. I can get to bios just fine
it's what to do after I open it that has me stumped. i contacted my computer's maker to see if they have a driver I need to install, or an update. All the cables and jumpers are correct, I'm going to pull the cover later to check that they are tight, to try and get my sound back, maybe nose around a little to see if there is something I did.
One of these years I'm going to own a real computer.

4. Most BIOS have a HD autodetect function.
See if you can find that and try it.
