If Norton sucks, what should I use? |
|
I've been running their stuff forever, but I see a lot of opinions here and elsewhere indicating it's problematic .
What is the problem, and what should I for antivirus? Is it the auto update connection that annoys everyone?

it's free and it works great ... i've installed AVG on several machines that were running Norton anti-virus and AVG still found viruses ... here's a link: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

3. I agree AVG is the way to go |
|
It's free and better catching stuff that commercial virus checkers, plus it updates automatically every day.
I used Norton and McCaffe for a time before I found AVG
AVG is better.

16. my biggest problem is XP falling apart, what is a good maintence program |
|
that is why i started running Norton SystenWorks is because it had a Utilities program that would "Find and Fix" ..WinDoctor.
i have seen maintence prograns on the market, but i have never heard anything about them..

2. The only problem I've had with Norton is takes a huge amount of |
|
system resources. Also make sure you have it configured correctly. I've gotten pretty good at it. If you have any problems feel free to PM me.

Both are free and work well. I run ZoneAlarm along with them and have had no real problems for about a year.

6. I've used Norton for ages |
|
last night I downloaded the latest Internet Security and Antivirus. It activated a trojan horse in my computer that it had missed, I noticed it when the send/receive lights were flashing steady on my modem even though nothing was connected to the internet. I found it (them... I think there are 2 but one must be new, can't even google it) and isolated them and i'm waiting for instructions on how to get rid of them.
Another problem is that 3 of my ports are now wide open and unprotected and I can't figure out how to protect them. They were ok before. I spent all day on this. Some security system! I checked it on their site, and their big solution is to install their firewall which is already running. It'll probably take me days to hear back from them and go through the help desk rigamarole.
I am really po'd and I don't recommend NOrton to anyone anymore.

8. I think its a virus of some sort |
|
although I can't find any info on it anywhere. Its something called svnlitup32.exe and it was transmitting out of my computer along with the other one msgfix.exe which is associated with the W32.Gaobot.SN worm.
I stopped them by blocking them with the firewall, then I turned them off with the task manager and changed their extensions so that they couldn't start back up. I'm no expert and I'd like to get instructions on how to ensure that they are deleted properly and that there is no further access into my computer.
I haven't heard from Norton yet and the new system sucks big time. It has slowed my computer down and I'm all nervous about these viruses... virii?

10. Well I got rid of Norton |
|
I had to take it to a shop to get rid of the virus that norton let in. They installed the free AVG. I bought a router and completely uninstalled norton. Now my computer is working great. I just contacted Norton for a refund which should be fun... they still haven't gotten back to me about the virus situation.
Norton really sucks!

I dropped Norton because I got tired of the annual fee and installed AVG Free at the suggestion of users on this group. I have been completely satisfied.

18. I'm thinking of switching to AVG as well, but... |
|
...I'm currently running a 90-free trial of Norton Internet Security (It came with the PC; I'd have never gotten this on my own). Do I need to UNinstall Norton before I bring in AVG?
I'll also be using Zone Alarm; It's what I've used for years until this new PC came in last month.
All advice welcomed. :)

19. You've got to have Norton Configured right. The one thing I don't |
|
like about the product itself!
BTW, have you decided yet?

It has a low memory footprint and is kept up-to-date religiously. With Firefox, Spybot, Crap Cleaner and AVG, my system is lean and mean!
