Dumb question from a computer idiot.
I really need to back up programs onto a cd. Like ad aware, spysweeper, spybot, avg, etc. If the system goes down I do not want to spend hours reinstalling those programs off the net.

I use Netscape & I've forgotten how to back up my bookmarks. Also, is there a way to back up my passwords? I mean the ones for forums like DU. Under 'tools' there is a password manager & I can click & it shows all the passwords. Do I need to write them down or can I export that file also to a cd.

Thanks for any help.

best

1. Password manager
I use PasswordSafe from http://www.schneier.com/passsafe.html

I suggest you enter all your passwords into this, it keeps the data in a seperate file (by default it dumps it into MyDocs) but you can copy or save it to anywhere. I keep a copy of the data file on my flash drive - it pays to have a backup!

2. backup tip
i have a folder where all my downloads go ... cleverly enough, i call the directory: "downloads" ...

this directory contains all the pre-installed programs i download from the net ... if i ever need to reinstall any of them, i know just where to look ... this would be an excellent directory to put on a cd so that you wouldn't need to go back to the net to get another copy ...

3. To save your bookmarks in Netscape .....

search for a file called "bookmark.htm". Or, there could be several in the same folder called "bookmark1.htm" ..... "bookmark2.htm" ..... "bookmark3.htm" ..... etc, if so, save the one with the most recent date. Make a copy of it and save it in a place you will remember or on a disc. Update it often. If you should re-install Netscape just write over the new bookmark.htm with the one you saved.

On the passwords ..... if it was me I'd make a "save screen" (a photo image) of the passwords and keep it in a safe place.

Best wishes ......
