Network printer questions |
|
I have a desktop with Windows 2000 and a Lexmark P700 hooked up with USB. I have a laptop with Windows ME on it and am running a wireless network. I am trying to figure out how to print to the Lexmark from the laptop. I can't find an IP address for the printer.
Any ideas?

I think?
Find the Printer Folder, right click the Lexmark printer icon and choose Properties, and find the "Share" box. Do whatever it takes to activate that. (Check the check box, etc..)
I think that's how it worked on my Win98 machine that serves my printer. I'm not 100% sure that's how it works in 2000?

I already shared it and gave permissions for my laptop. I am trying to figure out how to set IP addresses for the printer port. The laptop wants an IP address for the printer.

3. Maybe try the desktops IP address? |
|
I'm guessing the printer, connected to the desktop, won't have it's own IP address. When sharing, the laptop send the job to the desktop, which then handles sending the printjob to the printer.
Still, I don't recall having to set a printer IP address at all. I just saw the printer and sent the job to it.
Question: Have both the desktop and the laptop been set to the same Windows workgroup?

4. Yeah, both are in the same workgroup |

I can see the printer from the laptop on the network, but when I try to install it in the laptop it says I have ot configure the printer. When I go to configure it, it asks for the IP address.

5. Odd. Shouldn't need that. |
|
The printer and the desktop should have that covered.
Maybe see if you can just continue over that step?

6. Does It Ask Specifically For An IP Address Or A Network Address. |
|
If it is asking for a network address you should enter it as \\hostpc_name\printer_sharename. If it is asking you for an IP address then you are doing something incorrectly during the setup. The best way to install a network printer is to have the PC that is hosting its driver (in your case the WINXP box) "push" the driver to the laptop. In the share tab of the printers properties (on the XP box) there should be an option to install "Additional Drivers". Click this button and follow the directions to install the ME driver. Once the ME driver is installed all you should need to do to install the printer on your laptop is find it in "My Network Places", right-click it and click "Connect"
