OK, so now I think I screwed up
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 01:49 PM by RagingInMiami
I posted a thread last week asking the best way to remove a virus and I received some very good responses. But I think I screwed up by deleting the infected files I had in the "vault" because now I am unable to access Photoshop.

I even uninstalled PS and re-installed it, but when I try to open PS, I get "application failed to launch correctly."

I also get a message that says "unable to continue because of a hardware or system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable."

I made a print out of the files I deleted, but none of it makes sense to me. And the bad part is, in the process of trying to remove the viruses, I turned off "system restore" as it was recommended in one of the websites I was reading, so now that I turned system restore back on, my only restore point is today.

What can I do?

1. OK, a few things to try
Start in safe mode and see what happens if you try to start photoshop there. I don't know if that has any value as I do not use photoshop. This may tell you if you have any goofy things still happening.

Did you try webroot's spy sweeper? It is possible that you still have some issues and that is the problem. Go to webroot.com and download the free trial and let it take a whack at it.

I hate to ask this, but are you using a legal copy of photoshop? If not then the, ahem, pirated version may have had viruses stuck in it.

This is XP, correct?

If you have an XP cd, then click on start in normal mode not safe mode, then click on run and type the following;

sfc /scannow

This will check all your system files and replace any that are corrupted and missing. You must have the XP cd usually for this to work.

GO to download.com and get a copy of hijackthis. Please do not use this tool to remove anything. It can screw you up even worse if you do not know what you are doing. Just let it scan and make a log file and then post the log file here.

I repeat, do not use hijackthis to remove anything by yourself. I got yelled at by another Du'er for even suggesting someone use it.

So long as you do not check any boxes and do not click on fix my system you will have no problems at all. This will show us if you still have some bad stuff on there.
Finally, absolute worse case scenario. Back up everything and do a clean install of XP.

2. Yes, the PS is a legal version
And I did the webroot sweep as well as hijackthis, which became "adaware alert" after I downloaded it, so I hope it's the right one.

But it does not let me copy the "log file" to paste here.

3. Hmm, don't think that is the right program
download.com pushes their sponsored crap first.

Go back to download.com, search for hijackthis and go down the page until you see hijackthis.

download and run it with the system scan and log file. After a few seconds, the logfile should open in notepad. You should then be able to copy it and paste it here.

6. One thing looks suspicous here
The line;

system32\?hkdsk.exe

That doesn't look good. I googled it and it should probably be removed, but please google it yourself and see if you can learn more. Don't remove it until you read up a bit more.

Otherwise I think you have gotten your machine fairly clean. Check out the adobe page I put in my later post and see if that helps with your issues.

7. I think the best thing for me to do is to just start from scratch
I have a Toshiba recovery and applications disk, but I do not have a Windows XP disc. I think it just installs automatically.

So I'm going to start backing up my files to another hard drive that I have. Should I just transfer all documents, photos and music or should I transfer other things?

8. that's the main things
Also address books and email depending upon how you do those.

And you can export your favorites from your browser and save those.

good luck. :-)

9. And what about all that software I download for free
The spyware, a few photo programs, data retrieval programs. Should I just them down and download them again?

10. If you know you can dl them again
then yeah dl them again. If you have the install programs you dl'd you can back those up but anything that was installed can not usually be backed up because you can't retain the registry entries or get all the dll's

Also, if you have added any hardware since you bought your computer you will need to be sure you have the drivers cds for them or you can usually download them if you know what they are.

13. ONE MORE THING VERY IMPORTANT
as soon as you get done go to windows update and get yourself current on critical updates.

If your install is not at least SP 2 you could be very vulnerable to a virus or worm.

5. Which version PS?
Check out some of the ideas here. This is for 7.0. May be for later versions.

http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/325095.html

My previous suggestions were along the lines that you may still have spyware.

Since PS seems to be your problem now it may be best to shift to these ideas and see if they do you any good.

Towards the bottom is the suggestion that you do a reinstall in safe mode. But I would look the whole thing over, skipping the stuff about system requirements since you know it used to run.
