Anyone know anything about Verizon Broadband service
They make it sound like you do not need a router, but connection is similar to using hot spots.

1. not sure but ...
here's what i believe the deal is ...

first, i think it costs $59.95 a month ...

my understanding is that you would need to add a card to your pc or laptop ... the card is different from a standard wi-fi card ... this card would have send/receive capabilities more like a cell phone ... essentially, i think it would communicate to a local cell tower to connect you to the net ...

it sounds like you would NOT need a router to accomplish all this ... the advantage, especially with a laptop, is that you would have net access from almost anywhere ... one drawback of not using a router, however, is that if you have multiple computers at your house, you would probably need a separate account for each ... i'm not sure you could share an internet connection with this setup ...

i think Verizon used to sell this service for $79.95 a month ...

no idea about connection speeds using this service ... that might be worth checking out ...

2. I use their FiOS (fiber optic) service
http://www22.verizon.com/FiosForHome/channels/Fios/HighSpeedInternetForHome.asp

Available only as they install the fiber optic network in each area- they happened to do my neighborhood earlier this year and I switched. Ten bucks cheaper than Comcast, and several times faster!

No modem is needed- they plug a router directly into the phone line, and it outputs to the computer nic connector. Sweet.
