My defragger starts and stops, |
then starts and stops over and over. I turned off all the programs ran a scan disc then tried a defrag. I recently loaded my os into a new computer is there a setting I need to adjust somewhere? I downloaded a defragger to do the job, but I'd like to know what's going on here.

1. Are you running it in Safe Mode? |
Try booting up in Safe boot and running your defrag there. To get to Safe Mode, repeatedly hit the F8 key as soon as your PC starts to boot up and follow the menus.
Also make sure your antivirus is disabled.

4. turn off any screensavers too |

5. Check for spyware, adware, virii, and trojans (not the good kind) |
Something is running in the background that updates a data file of some sort, forcing defrag to start all over again.

6. oh yeah, pause the Task Scheduler on the task bar too |
that might help. You might have something trying to schedule itself.

7. Just make sure there is nothing running in the background. And |
run the Error Checker before you Defrag. Again the best thing is to run it in Safe Mode.

8. There is a wonderful fre-ware program called EndItAll |
that will shut down everything that isn't essential. I use it for defragging and burning DVDs. http://www.docsdownloads.com/Tier1/enditall.htm
