computer email pop3 help needed for comcast and mozilla and peoplepc
Hello Everyone

I just got comcast about two weeks ago. I had peoplepc.com. I use mozilla

My system is xp with sp2 installed and have put all the latest updates suggested for Microsoft products on toshiba laptop - I have norton internet security loaded

I have communicated with customer support at both companies - each ended with similar responses
it is not their problem
both said they do not support mozilla
with comcast I brought up IE so that we could at least see if a connection could be made - NOT
so he said I needed a new IE is was corrupted

I have set the smtp and pop3 settings multiple ways depending on the information I can find online
Peoplepc information disagrees with everything I had when it was working and with other forums

Everything did work one day for about a couple of hours - next day nothing

These are the settings I had in mozilla for Peoplepc when using comcast and it worked.
email does not work right now for either comcast or peoplepc pop through comcast or with dial up
_________
peoplepc pop
account name ptk - people
name
email address same

server settings - pop.peoplepc.om port 110
nothing check except leave on server and empty trash on exit

outgoing set to smtp.comcast.net port 25
use name and password is checked
user name - myusername is here
when using dial up - I will need to change the smtp settings to smtp.peoplepc.com
_______________________________________________________________

These are just some of the links I have used
The first one you have to scroll down to robitore 12/15/2005 posting to see what he discovered

http://www.techsupportforum.com/win-95-win-98/80814-outlook-express-error-number-0x800ccc0e.html

This is peoplepc stated settings which conflict as above user said and also with what I originally had for dial up
http://home.peoplepc.com/helpinfo/techsupport/default.asp#pop3smtpOutlook

Another site that list all the pop and smtp settings http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/wce/isp.htm

Also I turned off email outbound scanning to see if that helped - not

_____________________________________________

I have noticed when searching there are a number of post and issues with peoplepc in december

I have had on peoplepc with dial where it might not work for a day or two

but now I am going through comcast and can not even pop comcast email down

___________________________________

so anyone have any ideas - known bugs that maybe I am not finding in my search - anyone esle having trouble popping their email from comcast or peoplepc or another webmail system through broadband

I am bewildered

2. I have internet connection on either one
I can connect with dial up
I can connect with cable
I don't do both at the same time

I use mozilla as my email client

I only used outlook to satisfy the tech at comcast and it still did not work

I can not get email client (mozilla or outlook express) to pop mail from the pop3 server at either one

I am assuming - unless I can get the connection for the smtp outgoing working with comcast nothing will happen - this is not working

3. IMHO - It sounds like spyware to me
I've seen this before at work and at home among friends aquaintances. I bet a spyware process has taken over your network/internet connection.

Run some cleaner tools, cleaning/removing everything.

try:
www.ewido.com
www.safer-networking.org

good luck.

5. can you use a DOS prompt?
i dunno if anything is wrong with your mail applications but you can see if the mail servers respond without using a mail client.

just FYI, a lot of internet providers will force you to use their SMTP server; you noted having your mail app. configured to use comcast's SMTP server - this is correct.

i haven't used mozilla but in outlook express, you can delete and re-create the mail accounts; this may help but probably not.

using a DOS prompt will confirm if your connection to the mail server works. if this works, but the mail applications do not, it's probably a configuration problem. i wouldn't think this is spyware as you didn't mention having your homepage changed/unsolicited popups etc.

open a DOS prompt, and type: telnet <mail server name> 110

telnet is the command, pop.peoplepc.om is the server name (typo?) and 110 is the port.

since you have winXP, the DOS prompt should show an attempt to connect to the mail server. if this works, you'll see an OK message from your mail server. press CTRL and ] to close the session. you may also need to type "quit".

if you knew the other POP3 commands, you could use the telnet session to get a list of messages in your inbox and delete them.

in summary, telneting directly into the mail server will rule out connection problems and likely will point to configuration problems.

i swear by norton internet security but other people have problems. you may want to disable norton and see if you can get mail. if you speak with tech support again, see if they can walk you through telneting into the mail server on the mail server port. that should make sense to someone there.

if telneting to the mail server does NOT work, then something is blocking the connection - internet provider, firewall settings, mail application settings, hosts file, software glitch, etc.

11. earthlink acquired peoplepc IIRC
you connect to a peoplepc "name" but it's really an earthlink-managed server located in atlanta.

14. so this is why earthlink shows up in my firewall listings when I used
the automated span -

I since then put a block on mail.atl.earthlink.net - thinking since I found so many hits on mega messages coming from frances.mail.atl.earthlink.net and jacob.mail....... I figured it was spam - Hmmmmm now I need to find out where I put that block

7. ok an update on where I am so far
I have taken peoplepc definitions out of outlook express and out of mozilla and only have definitions for comcast mail
mail.comcast.net
smtp.comcast.net

if I disable norton internet security
I can send mail out then I can go and get mail and it makes the trip

I have even turned forwarding on at my peoplepc webmail account and can send something out to there and it makes the round trip

BUT - I have to turn off norton internet security

I have not contacted norton yet -

8. Probably a setting in Norton
I am not that familiar with Norton Internet Security but I have fixed a few folks computers where Norton's stupid firewall was preventing them from doing even the simplest tasks on their home network. My fix is to turn the firewall off and tell them their router has a built in firewall. If they want the Norton firewall enabled I tell them to take the time to read the documentation and figure out how to do it without hosing everything. I ditched Norton AV last year and switched to AVG Free. I have been happy with it so far.

9. Typical Norton ...

Block stuff you want, let everything else through. Norton is not your friend.

10. you may or may not need to call norton
the OK popper message is a greeting from the mail server - this confirmed that norton was blocking communication.

if you open internet security and go to the personal firewall section, there should be an option to configure the firewall. there may be a firewall rule blocking your mail program.

there are a few different versions of internet security so i'm not sure exactly where to go, but you can create a rule for mozilla that gives it unrestricted access to the internet. alternatively, you may find an existing rule that is blocking mozilla from the internet.

try searching symantec's site for setting up firewall rules. it's likely you'll need specific information to make this work (if you need to create a rule for unrestricted access for mozilla, you'll need to know where the mozilla executable is - the firewall rule will point to this executable program and give it full access to the net). don't make any unplanned and unintended changes cuz you can "break" your internet if you're not careful.

13. firewall list applications with access - and mozilla is suppose to
have access

I have same problem with outlook express - right now I have that working regularly - BUT I have turn off Internet Security to get messages in or out

Mozilla is back to not working at all - of course I have tried so many combinations - at this time I am only trying to go to comcast since I have that going with outlook express -

I tried to do Spybot search and destroy and got an unusal result - said a certain area it could not get to and that rest checked out ok - I do not have that message anymore - since then I decided I should make sure I have a later level of spybot - so I uninstalled the one I had - n

I downloaded new on - BUT it will not search problems because I get a error about needing integrator updates or manual - these come from the update section while installing as far as I can tell from searching - But when I ask for it to do the update - it just hangs and stays there for ever - I wanted to make sure I gave it enough time so I went away and came back - the only way out of that one is force power off - I have been doing some searching and found one guy on spy bot forums who seems to know some things - so I have been reading up on that http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1072

BUT I had to run out to post office to mail a book I sold on amazon and while I started to back out of parking space - a truck backed into me - it didn't look bad - so I said just the heck with it since my license still shows my old state (is paid up until 2008) and I have not changed it yet (my insurance is paid up) - but later in the sun light I can tell where it is bent - I think a pop out tool should be able to pop it back out - but now I wonder and where I live temporarily - the prices are high on everything -

so it goes today -
