Computer help for daughter in Germany
She bought a new Compaq laptop last August, has Windows XP, Firefox, Norton, I downloaded adaware, spybot, everything was fine when she left for Germany a few weeks ago. Now she can't get online anywhere, anytime, Norton is going crazy . . won't shut off, etc.
If she could get online I could possibly help her remotely. I think while she was at her school she tried to install a program so she could use the same service all the other students were connected to. I manage 3 computers at home and also help out local seniors with theirs so I know at least a few things . .

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

1. One suggestion I received
Which I will pass on to my daughter . . and also share here in case it helps anyone else with any connection issues

Local Whacko to Local Whacko-
Tell your daughter to search for winsockfix on Google.

A good site:
www.softpedia.com/get/Twe...kFix.shtml

You could email it to her and she could put it on a flash drive. Know what I mean?

If that doesn't do it, she needs to find a local computer geek to help her. Tell her to scan the classifieds of the local underground newspapers. I'm sure some speak perfect English.

2. How is she trying to connect?

Dialup?

Broadband?

Wireless?

I usually look for the most obvious cause of trouble first because it's so easy to overlook.

For instance ..... if she is trying to connect via dialup, she may/may not be dialing '9' first when she really should/shouldn't.

Wild guess, but it sounds like her new app changed the way she was originally set up to connect.

She can disable her A/V and firewall temporarily with a right click in the task bar to see if it will make any difference.
