Minor irritation - my old norton antivirus program keeps disabling |
|
when computer is shut off - started a few weeks ago, not a big huge deal, really, except if I am not the user who starts things up in the morning - rest of family tends to not notice these things and may forget to enable.
Any idea why it is not holding the setting to stay enabled?
it's the 2002 paid subscrption all updated, but no longer any tech support or I would just ask them.
Windows xp, home what else do you need to know?

1. Cannot help on your question but why do you pay for anti-virus? |
|
I took my computer to a tech shop for a minor and unrelated problem and the service tech removed Norton(He had to go to serious internal places where the beginner never goes) to remove all parts of this anti-virus program. He then installed a free anti-virus program (Anti-Vir) for me that is easy to use. He also installed Ad-aware, Spybot-Search&Destroy and SpywareBlaster. All are free and you can download them from www.majorGeeks.com. I know several people who use Anti-Vir and are comfortable with it. MajorGeeks has all kinds of freeware so its a fun place to visit. Perhaps this program would not be good for you but it works for me, I'm retired so $$ is tight. I don't use the computer very much except for Internet access.

renew, and of course caught something shortly after - blasterworm or some such...so renewed after that - last time was only about 12 bucks, seemed like a good idea at the time???? (It DOES seem to catch things in my email every now and then)
Also have adaware and spybot....(thanks to DUers!)oh and plus some kind of program from my server as well and the pop-up blocker from google...

3. I got caught up in that free with purchase anti-virus, |
|
then it became 35 dollars or so. Well, my trip to the tech was because of an error in attempting to network 2 computers (not to be done by a beginner) It was at that point that I found out about all the free goodies and saved lots of $$ in the process. The tech did tell me that Norton was difficult to un-install because there are components that will not disappear with a simple "un install" The free anti-virus and other knowledge gained by my unsuccessful networking attempt has long since paid for the visit to the repair shop. As you can tell, I'm a beginner and probably have not properly explained things but good luck.

4. I dumped Norton and McAfee for AVG. |
|
The price is right - they have a freeware version.

will check into this free stuff this summer when norton expires again...can't say I really have any other issues with them until now with this seeming auto-unabling problem. Anybody have any clue why that is happening?

6. There may be a setting that somehow un-checked itself. |
|
(disclaimer: not expert advice, just what I'd do given a similar situation)
You might want to open Norton (right-click or double-click on the system tray icon) and just poke around in the various menus - don't change any settings - to see if there's an option that says something like "enable on startup," or "enable realtime protection". If so, make sure it's checked. If not, there's your problem.
If no such option seems to exist (or it was already checked), and you have a Norton installation CD, I'd advise uninstalling and reinstalling the program. Some parts of Norton stick around in your system even after the uninstall, but since you'll just be putting it back on, that shouldn't matter.
If neither option worked, well, you'll have to find someone more knowledgeable than I, because that would be the point at which I'd be off asking for help myself. :)
