Handles and threads
Could someone explain to me what handles and threads are? I'm running Windows 2000 Pro and in my task manager I see that at any given time I've got around 7000 handles and around 300 threads. What are they and should I be concerned about them. About a month ago before I had to replace my motherboard, at start-up a DASHBOARD ERROR would show up with a message that I couldn't create any more threads. Since the new MB has been installed the error message is gone but all those handles and threads are in there somewhere. Thanks for any reply that I might recieve.

1. Handles and threads are the basis of everything in a computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_pointer">Handle, a kind of smart pointer, a reference to a position in computer memory

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thread_%28computer_science%29|Thread: a sequence of instructions which may execute in parallel with other threads>

Every program, including the OS almost entirely of handles and threads. And you will almost always have more handles than threads. Handles belong to threads.
