Problem with CD Drive on my laptop |
|
I am able to burn CDs, but when I insert a CD with software, it malfunctions. It sounds as if it is trying to spin, but it keeps hitting something.
Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

with a data disk, try this:
-open the tray -insert disk -depress and hold the left shift button -close the tray while keeping the shift key depressed. -wait until the activity light stops flashing on the drive and see if you can access the disk through Explorer.

4. I just tried it with a music CD and it works perfectly |
|
I'm going to try that method now. Well, after this song.

5. What do you mean by explorer? |
|
I tried that method and it still does the same thing with that one disc, which is software I need in order to make some CD covers. It doesn't with other software CDs as well.

7. Yes, I've been doing that, but it just doesn't work |
|
I've right-clicked on the D drive icon, even tried that "troubleshoot" function, which didn't find anything wrong.

9. No, I only got that message yesterday |
|
But not today. But when I put in the CD, it keeps making that same old sound as if it is trying to spin, but hitting against something.

a new drive. If you were getting an error message on every attempt to read a disk, I would suspect a software problem. Since you are not getting an error and the drive is making noise that is not the same as it's normal operation, I suspect hardware. You may want to get a second opinion from someone who can put their hands on your PC though.
