Lost one of our pups over the weekend - very sudden (Canine HGE)
Edited on Thu Sep-15-05 10:45 AM by Richardo
Our 7-yr-old white miniature schnauzer Pearl was doing perfectly well when I let the dogs out in the yard this past Sunday - checking the fence perimeter as usual and sending shout-outs to her friends in the neighborhood.

40 minutes later I found her limp and unresponsive with a pile of vomit and diarrhea at each end. Breathing, but labored. Her tongue was hanging out and almost white. I drove like a bat out of hell to the emergency vet with her on my lap, and he said it looked like hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). Prognosis was grave - she was in shock and required extraordinary measures just to diagnose. Bottom line, she was suffering in pain and we regretfully decided to let her go - for her sake. I buried her in the back yard next to Maxx.

I usually don't post these kinds of threads but just be aware of HGE if you have miniature or toy breeds. It can hit any dog, but those breeds are the most susceptible. Also, no one knows exactly what causes it. Sheesh.

RIP Pearl. We miss you.

1. How horrible, so sorry for your devastating loss
I have never heard of that in dogs (HGE). Condolences from the 48 family.

2. I'm so sorry for your loss of Pearl Richardo
 I've never heard of that ailment.....how horrible and scary.

I hope the good memories you have of Pearl's life will replace the sadness soon.

The worst part is watching our other schnauzer miss her. They used to groom each other. Even the JRTs are more subdued. :(

10. We had that same situation back in 2000
We had two lab mixes from the same litter. They were inseparable. When the female (Misty) died in Sept. 2000, Ranger was really sad. He died on Valentine's Day 2003 at almost 16 years of age, but he went through a couple of months where he didn't eat as much and moped around.

26. I know the feeling...
I had to have my Dalmation put to sleep on Tuesday because of kidney failure - the sweetest, most gentle dog on the planet - and my Lhasa Apso is absolutely bereft without her. He groomed her, too (or thought he was) as he'd spend hours trying to lick her spots off.

I wonder if it's harder on us or harder on their companion dogs. My Lhasa keeps searching the house and the yard for her, and it's heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you, this isn't easy for sure --

7. I'm so sorry, Richardo...
I had to have my kitty put to sleep recently, and it was also a situation in which extraordinary measures would be needed before even diagnosing. I felt those measures would have been too painful and frightening for her, so I said goodbye instead.

9. Oh, man, I'm so sorry.
Poor girl, rest well.

My Gracie had a couple of bouts with HG in her later years, but she was a larger breed (rottie mix) and so the fluid and blood loss didn't have the immediate effect that it did for your little one. No known cause.

I'm so sorry. It is a really scary and unpredictable problem, and the littlest ones are the most susceptible.

Best to you and yours.
