Help! I'm kinda freakin' out here
So I just get home from the gym tonight and feed my cats, and Nikko has this BALD spot, redish on the skin on the back of his neck!!!

I didn't notice it earlier today while I was at home.

I have no clue what it could be unless it's the BioSpot flee treatment I used on him and Jesse last night?!

But Jesse, so far, appears fine. And he's Siamese, and has no undercoat like Nikko, so I'm perturbed... Why would this happen to Nikko and not Jesse? Was it a bad reaction? Should I take him to the vet?

Any similar experiences?

1. Huh!
Don't know, just taking a guess - could Nikko be allergic to the BioSpot?

I would take him to the vet for a looksee.

I have not had a similar experience, but I do not have a cat, I have a dog.

2. It might be an allergic reaction
Doesn't appear to be serious though. I would take him to the vet and see if he recommends some alternative treatment for next time.

3. We had a dog who was highly allergic to preventative flea treatments.
It was ages ago. I can't remember what his reaction was. I think it was hives all over his body or something systemic like that. We couldn't give him the preventative flea treatments at all. We had to have him dipped after the fact.

I don't do preventative flea treatments with my dogs unless I actually see evidence that an infestation is beginning. Seems to work for us. Maybe we are just lucky

4. Call your vet and ask about Biospot
There was a poster on my vet's exam room wall warning against using over the counter spot flea products. It had a list of about ten products that can kill pets-but I'm not certain if Biospot was among them. My mom used one of those products and it caused her cat to vomit and have a seizure (ended up at the emergency vet-he survived). Our rescue only uses Advantage and one other prescription only treatment (not Biospot-but I can't recall the name offhand).

5. I agree it sounds like a reaction.
But I'd call the vet just to make sure. Is he acting normal otherwise?

6. Biospot is controversial
and there is a movement to have it banned. I use it due to the number of dogs I have and the cost involved. My vet said it was safe - I'll bet it was an allergic reaction. (the rescue group that I foster for won't allow it to be used on their animals)

7. thanks everyone
so it sounds like it's an allergic reaction, though i used it on him a few months ago and it was fine...

he's acting ok otherwise, and it doesn't appear to bother him when i touch it or blow on it. so i guess the fella's ok...

for some reason, i could have sworn someone here told me biospot was one of the better ones?! i tried hartz in the past and it bothered nikko so bad, i vowed never to use it again...

i'll add biospot to that list now!

thanks for the advice and knowledge everyone, much appreciated!

8. any new pictures of your handsome boys?
Glad Nikko is Ok besides that bald spot.

I used Advantage on my girls with no ill effects. But now they never go outside so I don't need to treat them.

13. Jesse gets more and more beautiful...
...while Nikko -- what can you say about a cat who can manage to look elegant in even the most humorous pose?

And what is it about Siamese sticking their tongues out? We had one many years ago who seemed to always have the tip of her tongue sticking out. In fact, that's the first mental image I have when I think of her...sitting contentedly in the sun, eyes shut and tongue showing.

15. Wow Again!
I can't believe how big Jesse is! He is still such a cutie. Love the picture with the little piece of tongue sticking out. I love when my kitties do that.

Hope Nikko is OK. Please let us know.

11. probably allergic reaction but might be ringworm
if the skin looks irritated. Blue lost fur like that when she first started chemo. Not from the chemo itself (kitties don't lose their fur, only their whiskers) but from the stress of the procedure. However, her skin didn't look irritated.

14. I also, thought about ring worm. There was a woman who brought
kittens to work to be adopted. Those of us who held them got ring worm. On the human skin, it is a red ring (fungus) and took 11 days to get rid of. It spread very quickly and ended any pets in the workplace. I would get to the vet quickly, because, it will spread to the other cat quickly and you. It could turn into a vicious reinfection cycle.
