Anyone here familiar with Catahoula Leopard Dogs?
We just took in five 6-week old Catahoula pups and I'm not very familiar with the breed.

I've done some poking around on the "internets" and came up with the following write up for our rescue website and petfinder listings.

Catahoula Dogs are high-energy dogs and, like the Border Collie or Australian Cattle Dog, require a lot of exercise. A fenced yard is a must since this dog is going to need a place to run. These dogs would be great at agility, flyball, or herding competitions.

Catahoula Dogs are very loyal and protective of their families. They can also be quite stubborn so you will need to begin obedience training at a very early age.

Does this sound like an accurate assessment of what potential adopters are in for? I'm not too worried about scaring people away if this is going to be "too much dog" for the average dog person.

You can see the pups here:

1. What a lovely little family of pups :)
I'm not familiar with the breed, but they sure are cute little pups :).

Most types of cattle dogs are pretty high-energy, so I'd say your description is probably pretty fair.

2. Yeah, we have two ACDs and they are high energy
Petey will be 10-years old in November and Tillie's 2. I love 'em both but they can make you crazy with balls, frisbees, and anything else they deem suitable to throw.

I had Petey's photos taken last month since we don't know how much longer we'll have him:

It came out pretty good so I'm thinking about getting one of each of the other dogs done as well.

3. But they are definitely a blast to have around :)
I can't have dogs now (no room, and my apartments won't allow 'em anyway), so I'm content with my two cats, but I do miss having dogs around :).

4. They are wonderful dogs!
When we adopted Cindy from an L.A. shelter, she was listed as an Australian Shepherd mix. Our vet (who was from Louisiana) told us that she looked like a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard, so that is what I tell everyone now.

Have you been to this web site? I think there are mostly breeders on there, but you can pretty much find out anything you want there.

Cindy is loyal, stubborn, smart, playful, and very, very strong. It's a good thing she has a great temperament, because there would be trouble if she was the least bit aggressive.
