English Setter in CA needs home or foster
Edited on Wed Oct-12-05 03:34 PM by Ayesha
*Ziggy is located in Los Angeles, CA*

About two weeks ago we rescued a purebred English Setter from the pound in Riverside. We were looking for a Katrina dog to foster, but saw him and were very surprised - it is rare to see English Setters in shelters around here. Of course we had to save him! He had kennel cough, was emaciated, and would have been put down soon. We have other dogs, so due to his illness, we've been boarding him at a kennel that specializes in rescues. We took care of getting him neutered and checked out by a vet - he seems to be between 4 and 6 years old, and fairly healthy except for possible hip displaysia which doesn't slow him down. He had a lot of minor cuts and sores suggesting that he'd been on his own for a while. He is a total sweetheart, adores people and loves to lean against you and soak up all the love he has been needing for a long time. He seems to like all adults, and kids too. We have named him Ziggy Stardust. :)

We were really hoping to keep him, but unfortunately we have discovered during his stay at the kennel that he is dog aggressive. He could probably learn to get along with another dog with socialization and time, but we have 3 dogs, one of whom is a bit on the grumpy side, and we are sure it wouldn't work. So Ziggy is looking for a home.

Ziggy is moderately active, but not at all hyper, and will need a home with someone who can exercise him daily as well as welcoming him as a couch buddy. He would do OK in an apartment as long as he gets exercise. If you have a yard, he requires a 6-foot fence as he is a bit of an escape artist. We prefer a home with no other dogs, and he has not been fully tested with cats.

To adopt Ziggy, we require a modest adoption fee of $200 (doesn't even begin to cover what we've spent on him), a home check, verifying that you have permission from your landlord if applicable, and your willingness to keep in touch by e-mail/occasional visit. We really love Ziggy and want to find someone who will feel the same!

We have contacted English Setter Rescue and they are being absolutely useless because he doesn't get along with other dogs. It makes me furious because he is absolutely wonderful with people! Perhaps someone knows a private ES rescuer who knows of an adopter who'd be a good match for him. He needs out of the kennel ASAP, poor guy is really lonely!

1. Sure he is an English?
Looks more like a tri-colored Gordon Setter to me. You may want to try these Gordon Setter contacts in California:

I own Gordons and sometimes in a litter you will get tri-colored pups. Hope this helps.

2. Really?
He looks like a field English to me. I'll e-mail them though, as I'm having trouble finding ANY setter folks to help right now. Thanks!

3. Awwww, Ziggy certainly is a handsome fella.
I wish I could have a doggie. One of these days I will.

4. Go to YahooGroups.com.
After registering, put in a search for rescue groups in California. There are many of them.
