Cat lays on warm cable box, is this bad for him?
It just occurred to me that the Demon spends alot of time on top of the cable receiver. Is he absorbing EMFs?

1. Demon will be fine, but It might be bad for the cable box...LOL
The kittie probably likes the warmth from the box, but that is how the box dissipates the heat it generates.

2. I don't know
Pad Thai loves to lie on the receiver and I'm really unsure about him doing so. I feel like he's baking himself there.

My Dad said that prostate cancer was the cancer most suffered by T.V. repairmen (which he was, and died from) but heck he smoked like five packs of cigs a day, and a quart of bourbon as well, so who knows?

3. Mine probably would too if they could get to it, instead they
use the computer monitors. Or the waterbed

4. I had a foster cat that dug the cable box. Good for their muscles.
Either it is the box or your bed. If I were you I'd go for the box.

5. EMF's and Cats
I have read that cats are drawn to electromagnetic fields, whether natural or artificial. It seems to do them no harm - in fact, they're stimulated by them. So it's probably fine for him - but not all species tolerate such things. Dogs avoid EMF's, for instance, and evidence indicates they're bad for humans as well. The conclusion: avoid the spots your cat preferentially seeks out, and feel confident about the spots your dog chooses.

7. I am finally convinced that EMF does not harm cats, other small animals...
Edited on Wed Dec-15-04 11:33 AM by meti57b
or people, ... but it took a bit of doing to arrive at that conclusion.

My 4 1/2 year old fip-negative cat developed lymphosarcoma (cancer), which is considered incurable and the cat is expected to live 9 months to 2 years at the most, with treatment. It's extremely rare for a young cat.

A friend told me she knows someone else whose cat developed lymphosarcoma and who has a lot of electronic equipment (computer stuff, TV, etc). She asked if my cat spent much time on my electronic equipment. Perhaps "completely unnerved" is the word that best described my reaction to that, because I have other cats, too.

I checked with our cat's vet-oncologist, who is considered an expert in his field, if EMF, especially the high EMF from a TV set causes cancer. He gave an unqualified "no, it does not". My husband recently had a bout with cancer and I asked his oncologist if he knew of any studies on small animals or other information if high EMF causes cancer. His reply was a "no link has been proven". Our regular vet said that EMF does not cause cancer and she has never read or heard that EMF causes cancer. She gave me a lecture on "hearsay evidence". A neurologist friend of ours reminded me, "everyone's cat sleeps on the electronic equipment" and said he has never read of a link to cancer. He also mentioned that cell phones do not cause brain cancer.

I googled for information and the most specific commentary I could find is that "studies are either negative or inconclusive". The State of Minnesota website said empirical studies have shown no link, and results of studies of actually placing small animals in high EMF fields have shown it does not cause cancer.

The lack of anything on the internet that says EMF causes cancer could be considered a sort of "negative evidence", ie: "if you've looked all over your house for your lost car keys and don't find them, there's a 90% chance they are not in the house". You can be sure if any link had been shown, you would have read about it somewhere.

I found an article on an Italian website (in English) that there were studies on the Polish military who worked in close proximity to radio transmitters, in the 1970s and they were showing about a 5% a year increase in all kinds of cancer. I could find no other studies, so again, "negative evidence".

So most probably the greatest harm done by EMF is if your cat does develop some serious condition in the future, you may get really unnerved about electronic equipment.

Or you may think about it like I am this morning when one of my other cats hasn't wanted to eat for 1 1/2 days and just wants to sleep all day. Is it the December weather and light? .... or is he sick.

9. thanks for the detailed info
I always kind of worry about EMFs, probably because there is a power line along the road that I frequently drive home on, and all the grass underneath grows up in huge patches like some SUPER-grass on steroids.

I just hope my cat doesn't get sick from laying on this box. He's my best bud. :)

8. ours changes the channel
she'll crawl up and lay on the remote -- then bingo the channel changes from whatever we are watching to some home shopping network show...

We use to put the remote on a shelf over the bed before going to sleep. One night the TV suddenly came on and I awoke to some waaaayyy toooo cheerful person selling stuff on a homeshopping channel. The cat was intently watching it.

i wasn't too worried until I saw that she was sitting next to the telephone while her paws on the number buttons.... good thing she doesn't know where we hide the credit cards
