Strange litterbox problem with Boots
Boots has lately taken to kicking the litter out of the box and onto the floor with the intention of taking one of his turds and kicking it around the kitchen as if it were a toy.

What do I do with my shit kicking kitty?

1. This made me laugh!
The only suggestion I can think of is using a covered litter box. But, I am sure you have aleady thought of this.

2. Pad Thai once used a turd
to remind me who was boss regarding a business trip I took. I found the turd by the door so it was the first thing I saw "welcoming" me upon my return.

And I know it was Pad Thai!

3. When I have to provide a litter box,
for an ailing kitty for instance, I use a plastic storage container with sides that are about a foot high. Cat can still get in and out, but it cuts down on litter scatter and shit kicking. The other advantage is the box comes with a lid that I can pop on when box is no longer needed.

4. is the litter box clean?
I know when mine were kittens they would take their poo out of the box and then do a protest march trying to hold the poo in one paw while running around the room to let me know it was time, goddammit.

5. How old is boots?
Is boots a kitten or full grown cat? I had an experience with "Poo-poo hockey" when we were stationed in Guam. My little 3 month old kitten, Samantha, kicked poo-poos out of the uncovered litter box while we were away. When we returned, I found little presents under all the doors and under the furniture. Maybe boots will grow out of it. If you have an uncovered box, maybe a cover will work. Who knows with kitties.

8. Boots will be 1 1/2 on Valentine's Day
He's an overgrown kitten if you ask me. :D

All kidding aside, he's a young adult cat. But he acts like a little kitten.

6. Get a cardboard box that is about 3 inches larger
than the litter box on all sides. Cut it down so that it is about 6 inches high.
Center the box in the middle, and you're all set. You should only need it for
about 2-3 weeks, until Boots' habit is history.

I actually ended up leaving my cats' box this way, because it's a lot less messy.

7. I have an older kitty that is not too fastidious anymore
and he drags turds out that don't pinch off. The little kitten used to think they were hockey pucks in the basement.

A lid would help to keep the poop in the pad.

9. RE-DIRECT!
Does he have other more socially acceptable toys? The best toys are often the most ordinary things. Tinfoil, toilet paper rolls, etc. Ping Pong balls are great for the really active kitties-- lots of bounce! I guess I'd wonder too if he was trying to tell you something
