Is it ok to lie to someone that their pet is cute when it's not?
I was walking my dog last night when I ran into a new neighbor walking hers.

She complimented me several times on how cute Sarah is, so I felt obligated to return the favor.

But in reality, it was the worst looking dog I've seen in a long time.

Apparently it is a Chihuahua Shit-zue (sp?) mix. UGLY!

But I didn't think it was right to say that. Besides, the dog can't help its parentage.

So, I said, "Your dog is...er...cute also."

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned.....

1. ah that is called a "white lie"
It really is ok and it is not a sin. Just let it go and be glad you were able to make someone feel good about their pet too! :D

2. This works for ugly babies as well . . .
"Your (fill in the blank) is adorable! What a sweetheart. You must love (him/her) so much!"

I always figure that if, in my head, I add , it's not really a lie.

I just can't bring myself to call anything ugly (animal or baby) cute unless I actually think it is.

3. Look for and comment on a trait that really *is* there -
She has a sweet expression! He seems to love you very much! What a friendly pup! Shy girl?

I think people whose pets are not magazine photo cute know - and love their pets all the more.

I used to get so ticked off when the babies, toddlers, preschoolers at the daycare center were treated differently because their looks were 'different', they were dressed in hand me downs, their clothes usually had food smeared down the front, or bad hair days were their fate in life. I always gave these kids lots of extra attention. The 'cute kids' got tons of attention from everyone else at the center - they didn't need me.

6. I am the owner of one of those less than cute dogs.
But I do love him so, and he is very cute on the inside. Most people say "er.... he has an interesting coat." Or "What kind of dog is that?" My old purebred Border collie was very beautiful and used to get the lions share of the attention when we went out. I never thought that was fair. So if you meet someone with two dogs, one very beautiful and one not so much, be sure to pay equal attention to the animals. Don't favor one over the other ;)

7. The only really ugly dogs
I've seen what a friend of mine's neighbor had. We called them "Rotten Wienies". The female Rottweiler evidently let the male Dachshund knock her up. They looked like they had been severely whomped with the ugly stick.

8. Oh my, that does sound odd.
A neighbor had a Dachshund/Basset mix. That was an odd looking animal. It had the Dachshund body and the Basset face.

My boy is a brindle Chihuahua mix. Mixed with what, we don't know. He has a large body with a barrel chest, short legs and a small head with bulging eyes. Funny looking, but he is a really good dog; protective and patient with the children, a good leader to a series insecure and under-socialized rescue dogs I have brought into the house (yes, he is the alpha, lol) and always a good and loyal companion to me.

9. You'd really be a jerk if you turned to someone and said,
"That's an ugly dog you've got there." If you're really disgusted say, "oh, what an interesting breed," and let it go at that.
