Poll question: Is he cute or what?
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 03:44 AM by Is It Fascism Yet
The "Is he cute or what poll" also known as "puppy up for grabs"

Hey, is there anyone out there in the Flagstaff vicinity who could give a loving home to a beautiful puppy I picked up off the road today? He was hungry, wet and cold, dodging cars in the road in the rain. I took him to the vet's office, to see if they could identify his breed. Even the staff there thought he was adorable! They said he is only 2 or 3 months old, and absolutely beautiful, a golden retriever mix. I can't keep him, one dog and one cat is the limit of my ability to care for animals. He is in my home now because I wouldn't leave him on the road. I called the "inhumane society" but they said they would just put him to sleep if I brought him in. He is only a baby, seems in good health, has floppy ears, playful and friendly. Anybody? Please?

In the first photo, he is still wet from the rain and so has some dark streaks on his fur but they disappeared when he dried. He is very cute with a white chest, golden back, 4 perfect white socks, and a white tipped tail. He is muscular and strong looking but seems quite young. His paws seem large for him. His ears are almost like cocker spaniel ears, having tufts of fluffy fur. He is playful and got along well with my dog and cat, however, he is still in the chewing phase and chewed up quite a bit of stuff already. We also found that he is not housebroken. I am going to try to find his parents, but, failing that, want somebody who could love him to please give him a home as mine is at critical mass. He has an excellent disposition and tonight he already learned to sit before he got his treats. You know how pictures are! They don't usually flatter, the puppy is even cuter than this when animated!

1. OMG! I WISH I could! I'm in Southern CA, and have 3 dogs now...
so I'm not allowed by the county to have more than that. Are there any other rescue organizations in your area? Sometimes all they need is a donation to get them to keep him until he can be adopted. We did that many years ago with a dog WE rescued in the middle of a very busy street in the rain. The LA SPCA took her in, promising to keep her for a couple of months at least, but they usually placed puppies easily. We drove an hour to that shelter, paid the money, cqlled to check on her daily, and she was adopted in four days.

Of course, there is the possibility of keeping him if you think hard about it. My first dog was an "only dog" for his first eight years, was slowing down and becoming old before his time, and sighed at us all the time. When we moved to a place where we were allowed to have a second dog, we got a puppy. It changed the first dog's life so much that we vowed to try to never have less than one dog. He started playing with her, she kept him busy and happy, he stopped lying around all the time, acted like a young dog again. He never sighed at us again, and he lived to be fourteen.

My daughter and I would love to take that puppy.

2. He is just adorable! What a cutie!
Kudos to you for rescuing him! I have friends in rescue who might be able to help, but I'm in NY. But this dog should be very easy to place. He's small, young and adorable. Check here. My friend's rescue group posts photos and profiles of pets up for adoption here. It's a national website so you could search for private rescue groups in your area whom you could contact.

http://www.petfinder.org/

Another suggestion is to contact the breed rescue for Golden Retrievers. Each breed has its own and some take mixes.

Also, have you placed a photo ad in the newspaper? Or called local radio stations, who often make announcements about missing pets? Mine does. Someone may be looking for him. I sure would be! Or you could call around to animal hospitals hospitals or shelters, since people searching for lost dogs often check with them.

But if I were you, I just couldn't bear to give him up!
:loveya:

8. ah but I can't keep him
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 10:47 PM by Is It Fascism Yet
I already have an elderly dog and an elderly cat. They require a lot of attention from both me and the vet. It's not going to work for me to keep him, I have my limits of pets already, and they are too old to share their home with a newcomer. But don't worry, he is warm and getting petted and well fed and we will find him a home. He would be perfect for a family with children.

9. Believe me, I have shared your experiences
There have been times that I felt I should just move into a cage at the vet's, I have spent so much time there. I tend to adopt older animals from rescue, so they often have, or soon acquire, health problems. But I wouldn't trade them. However, all my guys have found me, one way or another. I don't go out looking for pets who need me. And, if that adorable puppy found me, I'd consider myself extremely fortunate, and would not be able to give him up. It would be nice to look forward to spending an entire lifetime with an animal.;(

3. Check the "wanted" listing for your local
Freecycle chapter, listing with a Petfinder no kill shelter is also good. Since he looks like he's part retriever, and still very young, you might have him tested by a local assistance/ service dog provider to see if he could fit into their programs. My are desperate for intelligent, trainable puppies.

4. A sister of a friend lives in Flagstaff
I sent the link to my friend to see if she would like the dog. Looks like a lovely family member. I would take him myself, if I could.
